June Previews 2020 – Small Publisher Spotlight Books

Previews gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Here’s the spotlight new books coming out of June Previews for the smaller publishers that include Dark Horse, IDW, Image and others.

Here’s some of the books we’re likely adding to our pre-orders pulls and subscribes.

Dark Horse Books

For every Alien fan out there, these are must pick ups for pure reading entertainment.

Alien: The Original Screenplay #1

Alien: The Original Screenplay #1 (Walter Simonson Variant Cover)

Alien: The Original Screenplay #1 (Walter Simonson Variant Cover)An all new Alien with an all new Alien!En route to back to Earth, the crew of the starship Snark intercepts an alien transmission.

Their investigation leads them to a desolate planetoid, a crashed alien spacecraft, and a pyramidic structure of unknown origin. Then the terror begins . . .

Just in time for Alien Day (April 26, 2020)* Adapted from the original 1976 screenplay by Dan O’Bannon (author of Moebiuss The Long Tomorrow, cowriter of Total Recall, writer/director of The Return of the Living Dead).

That’s it for Dark Horse Books in June Previews. Unless I’m missing something, just about everything else was trades and collected volumes.

IDW Books

Canto is back with a new 5 issue series. Loved this series and looking forward to more.

Canto II Hollow Men #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Zucker)

Book 2 of all-ages fan favorite Canto begins!

Once, a little tin slave with a clock for a heart broke all the rules-he found love, he was given a name, and he escaped his masters to go on an epic journey to save his love’s heart. He met strange allies and terrifying enemies and, ultimately, though his adventure didn’t turn out as planned, he returned to his people and led them to freedom.

That freedom is in jeopardy when Canto discovers his people’s clocks will stop unless they return to captivity. He and his friends Falco, Rikta, and Veratta embark on a new adventure to save the lives of all their people. Can they lift the curse before their time runs out?

I’m anticipating this next series could be a great read. Already with an option out there by AMC who owns the rights and the big name authors on it, it’s definitely on the pickup and read list.

Sleeping Beauties #4 (of 10) (Cover A – Wu)

Sleeping Beauties #4 (of 10) (Cover B – Woodall)

Based on the horror novel by Stephen King and Owen King and adapted by Rio Youers (The Forgotten Girl) and Alison Sampson ( Hit Girl, Winnebago Graveyard)!

With A covers by Annie Wu (Black Canary, Hawkeye)!

A strange sleeping sickness, known as Aurora, has fallen over the world, and strangest of all, it only affects women. In the small town of Dooling, a mysterious woman has walked out of the woods; she calls herself Eve and leaves a trail of carnage behind her. More mysterious: she’s the only woman not falling asleep.

I don’t even currently read any of the TMNT titles but this one might be an exception for me.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Last Ronin #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Eastman Kuhn)

It’s the TMNT event of 2020! Springing from the minds of TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comes an epic like you’ve never seen before!

In a future NYC far different than the one we know today, a lone surviving Turtle goes on a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends.

Kinetic layouts from Eastman, moody inks from Andy Kuhn and a thrilling script full of surprises from longtime TMNT scribe Tom Waltz all combine to make this one of the most memorable TMNT stories you will ever read! Oversized in both format and page count, this is a perennial TMNT tale that can’t be missed!

This next one is from a very popular podcast, so don’t overlook it. Fans might seek this one out.

Voyage to the Stars #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Williams II)

Voyage to the Stars #1 (of 5) (Cover B – Daidone)

The hit sci-fi comedy podcast starring Colton Dunn (Superstore), Felicia Day (Supernatural), Janet Varney (Legend of Korra), Kirsten Vangsness (Criminal Minds), and Steve Berg (Drunk History) crashes into comics!

Earth is gone. Only one intrepid crew of misfits managed to escape, now determined and ambiguously destined to stop a growing, ancient evil from consuming the universe. Though stopping it may be tricky, as our heroes can’t help but destroy just about every planet and species they come across. Kinda debatable who’s the bigger threat.

Voyage to the Stars is a bonafide podcast phenomenon! With 2.5 million downloads in its debut year and over 100,000 viewers on Twitch, the wild sci-fi podcast that’s consistently ranked in the Top 100 for comedy is now on its way to conquer the comics world, helmed by five-time Harvey Award-nominee James Asmus!

Image Comics

Not sure how I feel about this first one. Didn’t they already make a animated movie about a really large girl that fights along side monsters? This time it’s just Big Girls battling Big Men who are now considered monsters? Might get a small following though if it’s entertaining but I’m not so sure yet.

Big Girls #1

When men become giant monsters hellbent on destroying the world, only girls can stop them-BIG GIRLS. Meet Ember-she writes poetry, loves to read, and she’s a 300-foot-tall full-time monster killer! She and the other big girls are all that stand in the way of our world’s complete annihilation!

Critically acclaimed artist JASON HOWARD (TREES) takes full creative control as the writer and artist of a tale that’s a cross between JOHN WICK and GODZILLA by way of HBO’s GIRLS.

The book that will get people to buy cause it’s got big boobs on the cover and it’s about taking down Trump. Meh..

Bomb Queen Trump Card #1 (of 4)

It’s 2024, and supervillain Bomb Queen wants to stop Donald Trump from becoming president for life. Her plan: campaign against Trump, steal his voter base, and lay bare America’s dark underbelly in the process.

BOMB QUEEN returns after eight years in a brand-new series featuring all the explosive satire and twisted fun her fans have come to expect-in other words, it’s pretty much guaranteed to offend everyone!

Only because it’s named after the website. I kid, it’s Chew, one of the best series ever.

Chu #2

‘THE FIRST COURSE,’ Part Two Bodies start to pile up. And Tony Chu gets a new partner.

As you can likely tell, when I was first getting back into comics was around Chew was still going strong.

That’s how I decided on my current handle, agentpoyo. So anything related to Chew is a must for me. Love it, love it, love it.

This next one just seems great. It got my attention from the cover and them mentioning 2001 Space Odyssey on it’s own.

Hedra

In a glorious exploration of the comics medium with echoes of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Flash Gordon, Chris Ware, and Moebius, a lone astronaut leaves a world ravaged by nuclear war in search of life. What she finds is beyond all explanation.

‘This beautiful, intricate marvel is one of the fullest expressions of what can be done with comics that I’ve seen in years.’ -Warren Ellis

I am fully on board with Mercy. Great read, great art. Can’t beat that right?

Mirka Andolfo Mercy #4 (of 6) (Cover A – Andolfo)

Mirka Andolfo Mercy #4 (of 6) (Cover B – Camuncoli)

Just when Goodwill needs her most, Lady Hellaine is on the verge of collapse!

Will unexpected help from an unlikely ally be enough to turn the tide?

Place your bets: it’s time to unveil the identity of the infamous Woodsburgh Devil, and if you thought the end of the previous issue was shocking, well-think again!

You’re in for a hell of a ride, fellas.

Mirka Andolfo Mercy #5 (of 6) (Cover A – Andolfo)

Mirka Andolfo Mercy #5 (of 6) (Cover B – Daniel)

Lady Hellaine’s elaborate plan takes shape, but the dark heroine created by Mirka Andolfo has not yet dealt with the consequences of her actions and with the hazy memories that more and more often emerge from her conscience.

Is it really possible that the only answer for all her troubles is…love?

For you Witchblade fans out there, if you all still exist. Maybe in much smaller numbers now but I know there’s a few of you still.

Witchblade #1 25th Annv Ed

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of WITCHBLADE with this deluxe commemorative edition of the first issue that launched a universe!

Return to the classic issue with writers DAVID WOHL (DARK SECTOR ZERO, Brothers in Arms) and CHRISTINA Z. (Bloodrayne), and legendary artist MICHAEL TURNER (JLA) as they introduce Sara Pezzini, Kenneth Irons, Ian Nottingham, and of course the mystical gauntlet itself to the world!

This limited edition will only be printed once, and a set, limited quantity will be available based on orders, so don’t miss out!

That’s it for now for the small publishers. I tried not to do any resolicited books that were mixed into the previews. Stay tuned as I try to get my spotlight previews for DC, Marvel (maybe, Marvel’s previews list is super small) and Indie books out in the coming days.

Tell us what you’re pre-ordering out of the small publishers in the comments or on the forums.
