Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 7/1/20

Sorry. For some reason this was scheduled and not published.

Every week, hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 7/1/20.

Weird week, no Dark Horse (again), no DC, and no Marvel, but there are some great looking indy books worth looking at.

Negan Lives #1 – I know some people have strong feelings for or against Kirkman bringing back the Walking Dead. But as I mentioned in the spoilers, Kirkman paid for the print run, paid for shipping on the books, and gave the books to retailers for free, including the Silver and Gold Variants. All money from the books go directly to your local comic shop. So grab a copy and help them out if they are open.

Breathers #3 – I keep recommending this quirky indy book. With all that is going on, and many states requiring masks, this book almost feels prophetic. Honestly surprised it didn’t pop when the COVID 19 happened. Breathers follows a small cast of individuals as they struggle to make sense of the dystopian world they live in, as a virus is unleashed into the air, rendering it deadly to humans. Among them: a detective whose addiction to the drug known as “Filter K” takes over his life; a brother and sister who, due to recent events, start to wonder if the air really is deadly, or if it’s all just a conspiracy; a mother and daughter who will do anything to keep their family together; and a breather salesman who is looking to make amends for his past mistakes. They are all survivors of this virus-plagued world. They are all “breathers.”

Devils Highway #1 – New AWA series. Have been very happy with the books they have been putting out. Great art and story. A young woman with a dark family secret embarks on a quest to hunt down the serial killer that brutally murdered her father – only to discover he is just one piece of a national network of evil that snakes across the country and hides in plain sight. To catch the devil she must first embrace the darkness within.

Darchon #1A – New Red Giant book set in the White Widow world. Blaque guards the portal between light and darkness. When nightmares from the other side threaten our reality he is the last defense. The master of magic holds secrets that we can only begin to imagine. What will happen when they are revealed?

Duel Identity #1 – Another new series from Red Giant. Artemis is the world’s greatest secret asset. She’s a spy, assassin and superhuman secret agent all rolled into one – until her cover is blown! Now she must adopt a public persona as the world’s first superheroine, Andromeda. Can this trained killer pretend to be something she’s not?

Katrina #1 – Red Giant, again, Set during the events of Hurricane Katrina, this story is inspired by the real mythology surrounding the origin of vampires in America. Now the hurricane that bears the name of the vampire queen herself, will set her free on an unsuspecting modern world!

Magika #1 – Red Giant, yet again. They are really rolling out their line strong. A young boy discovers a magical world filled with strange mystical creatures who come into our world through a mound in his grandparents’ backyard.

Shadow Children #1 – You guessed it Red Giant. In the magical world known only as Elsewhere the world’s unwanted children have found a home. Under the watchful eye of Kerju, master of the realm, the children develop the special powers they could never have dreamed of in our own mundane world. But sometimes a child wishes to return to our world. When young Jessica makes that choice, there are some in Elsewhere who will stop at nothing to get her back. And even if Jessica does make it, will the family she ran from pay the price?

Ezequiel Himes Zombie Hunter #1 – New series from Amigo, who put out great books. From the Eisner-nominated Victor Santos (Polar, Violent Love) and Alberto Hernandez (Crosso-ver!) comes a zombie apocalypse thriller packed with action! The living dead triumphed, and now on the top are the “Fathers”, undead with telepathic powers… and the living form the base of the food chain. And there, Ezequiel Himes looks for vengeance.
