Alana’s Weekend Specs: The Gwentacular

Aloha CHUniverse and welcome back to Weekend Specs! This week we are dusting off the Bush CD’s and talking everything Gwen. This will be an easy one for me with little to no research as I’m the Vice President of the Gwen fan club the only bigger fan is our President of Gwen fandom Poyo. All the spider incarnations are hot as lava right now and Gwen is no exception so let’s dig out her keys and be prepared for Gwendemonium, let’s jump in!

Amazing Spider-Man #31 1st Gwen Stacy

We will start at the begining with 1st Gwen Stacy. Many agree this has been a very under valued silver age 1st appearance but it has ticked up a little the last few years.

Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #0 1st Spidergwen

Ive been singing this books praises for years now and you know im not going to stop now. 3 whole panels of Spider Gwen before Edge of Spiderverse #2. These 3 panels are a borderline full appearance in my book. Tell yourself they are cosplayers or trick or treaters or whatever makes you sleep at night for not owning this. I dont know how someone can dress up for a character that hasn’t came out yet?. If I ever write for Marvel the first story I write is a Lady Thor and Spider Gwen time travel story explaining why they are in Hawkeye vs Deadpool # 0. There is a regular cover and a Alamo city con variant with a print run of 3000.

Guardians of Knowhere #1 1st Gwenom on cover only.

Like the book above you are going to notice alot of weird 1st appearances like this one taking place on a cover 1st. This book has gone up from the $10 bill it use to be to $25-$30

Spider Gwen #24 1st Full Gwenom

Ok so here we get the long awaited comic appearance of Gwenom. This took retailers by suprise because many were thinking #25 would be 1st Gwenom. The JSC cover is the only one to truly have a full Gwenom on the cover. These Gwenom books have had a huge uptick in popularity these last few months.

Ghost Spider #10 1st Gwenage on cover only.

So we have the 1st appearance of Gwenom on a cover and the same holds true for the Carnage incarnation of the character first appearing on a cover as well.

We have a couple great Gwenom covers for Spider Gwen #29, Spider Gwen #30. There’s also a few Greg Horn SDCC Gwenom variants that predate Spider Gwen #24.

Spider-Man 12 1st Gwen and Miles kiss

This is an important book because we find out Gwen and Miles are married and have children on a different Earth.

Spider Gwen #4 1st Gwen’s Goblin

This was an anticipated issue but ended up being a let down as the character is Harry Osborn. The problem with Spider Gwen villains most are just different Earth versions of already existing characters. Like evil Daredevil who first appears in EOSV #2 or Peter Parker Lizard which later becomes Doc Connors Lizard.

Spider Gwen Ghost Spider #1 2018 1st Gwen the Goblin evil Gwen

There is always an evil version, evil Gwen plays the role of a Goblin in the Ghost Spider series.

Spider Gwen #8 variant 1st Gwen 2099? Iron Spidey Gwen ?

On the Age of Apocalypse variant to this issue we get this weird Gwen to never be seen again. Some spec that this is Gwen 2099 or Iron Spidey Gwen and first appears on a cover like many of the different Gwens with weird appearances on covers first.

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2 1:25 1st Gwenpool cover only.

Again here we go a Gwen character first appearing cover only. This was hot out the gate and has always hurt the value of Howard the Duck #1 1st full Gwenpool.

The 1:25 variants for the first 3 issues of Howard the Duck all do fairly well.

Gwenpool #13 variant 1st Venom Gwenpool cover only.

Notice a pattern, 1st appearance cover only. This book has other keyness it is the first time Gwenpool and Deadpool meet.

Edge of Venomverse #2 1st full Venom Gwenpool.

Gwenpool plays a pivotal part in the Venomverse story.

She becomes Poison Gwenpool in Venomverse #4.

Gwenpool #19 1st Evil Gwenpool and #20 1st cover

Again we have to have an evil version.

This book also makes fun of the Miles Gwen kiss.

Tales of Suspense #75 1st Sharon Carter 1st Batroc

Batroc is a friend and mentor to Gwenpool. This book has been key for other reasons so you may have it.

Tales of Suspense #94 1st Modok

Modok is probably Gwens biggest villain as Spider Gwen and Gwenpool. This book has received a lot of deserved love lately after all this time.

So there you have it all things Gwen. There’s a lot of different 1st Gwen version of characters covers not listed here but I suggest you get a set of them, you never know where the next Gwen character will pop up. I didn’t list EOSV #2 because I’m pretty sure we all know of that book in this day and age. Not a lot of villains for the Gwens as of yet, most are different versions of already existing characters. All the Gwen stuff has been scorching for a couple months so get it while you can. With Gwen there’s always money to be made, Poyo’s money for sure. Stay safe thanks for reading and happy hunting!

  1. Overlooked and undervalued book that was massively important way back is ASM #144 1st Gwen clone appearance. Still a classic.

  2. A copy of Hawkeye vs Deadpool #0 Alamo con variant signed by Stan Lee went for $500 on 6/21 making it the new record sale for the book.

    1. I feel like Stan Lee CGC SS skew all books. Hundred dollar books all of a sudden become $500 books. $300 of that can probably be attributed to the Stan Lee sig (which, let’s be honest, may have been written by his thug handler towards the end there) $100 to the key book, then $100 of fudge for the combo/slabbed nature of the book. I’m sure there will be a day when Stan Lee signatures dry up, but he was really producing thousands of signed books per weekend in the final years there (as were those around him).

        1. Why’s that? I’m in the same boat, but curious about your take.

I owned a lot of autographs in the past. Everything from Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and yes Stan Lee, down to some things like Greg Horns and other less than legendary creators. Some I personally witnessed, others were cgc SS from somebody else. I ended up selling everything I didn’t personally witness from people I never met. Because, if you weren’t there, what’s the point? It’s honestly just kind of a fetish piece/ hopeful peculation it gains value some day. There was so much bad press around Stan Lee signings toward the end there. He was being reminded how to spell his name and accounts make him sound less than excited to be sitting in front of a line of thousands of people scribbling his name. Then there’s the question about who around him was actually making money of this little cottage industry at that time. About 18 months before he died I resolved that, even if I had the chance to meet him and get a signature, I wouldn’t do it. I figured I would be the guy to just leave him alone. Cheech from Cheech and Chong used to live in my neighborhood and I always left him alone too. Same with the guy who plays Phil Dunphe in Modern Family. I just figure, why be yet another jabberhead that interrupts their day in their own neighborhood?

          1. I’m just not big on autographs first and its just that the man signed any and everything. He signed books he had no take or part of.

Some modern signed books are okay to flip but when it comes to classics, id rather have them untouched in original condition.

              1. My wife is the same as you Poyo. She will not buy a signed book. I’m the one that buys then for her. She says that if she ever gets a signed book, it will be in the back or inside the book where it doesn’t destroy the art.

  3. ‘Not a lot of villains for the Gwens as of yet, most are different versions of already existing characters.’
I wonder if this was done ironically, seeing as Gwen and all forms of Gwen are different versions of an already existing character…Gwen Stacy…?‍♂️

  4. Nice write up Alana- appreciate the time you took to provide the community with this. I don’t think the writers that take time out of their own life to provide reading entertainment for FREE SITES are given enough credit!

    1. Love that Alamo H vs D #0. It is an underrated book for any Gwen collector

    2. Spiderman 14 features a cover of Miles and Gwen as groom and bride. Compare that to the cover of Joker and Harley “wedding” issue. Cheap spec

    3. There’s a Putri variant for Spider-Gwen 27 – featuring Gwen as Phoenix. Another weird but cool incarnation cover.

  5. Hawkeye v Deadpool is a great book in general. It’s undeniable those two female heroes were published there first. I think it will always good some value, but it will likely always be the Hulk 180 to the Hulk 181. Regardless of what you call it, EoSv will be the more valuable book whether that’s right or not.

  6. ASM 31 is criminally undervalued IMO…without Gwen Stacy, there are no alternate versions of her…

  7. weekend spec is #awesomness.thanks for this list.have a blessed week blind adam and don’t forget spectular Spiderman annual #8 is the first modern Gwen Stacey clone . blind adam out

  8. Great write up!

There’s an often overlooked comicxposure variant for asm#9 (the 2014 series) not only Gwen’s 2nd app but features her Silk and Spider-Woman on the cover together for the first time!

  9. His name is Ty Burrell and he’s a genius. Cheech Marin? Seriously where do you live? Great write up Alana.

  10. I have a copy of Spider-Gwen #25 1st print, but without the lenticular cover over it. It doesn’t appear that the lenticular cover was removed, as the book looks very crisp, with tight staples. I saw one sold on Ebay, but was listed as a 2nd print. Does anyone know whats up with that?

      1. I don’t think it is the 2nd print. It doesn’t say second printing, and has the same color details as the lenticular cover without the Sportflics crap

          1. I don’t know why people are listing #25 as 1st Gwenom when I was looking at sales for the 2nd print. People charging $40 saying it’s a rare 2nd print and 1st Gwenom. Gwenom is in about 20 panels in #24 and it’s a full origin.

          2. No, it’s different. The logo is white, and the corner cover box is yellow. No barcode and it doesn’t say second printing.

            1. I don’t know man. If the President (Poyo) and Vice President (Alana) of the Gwendom Fan Club say it’s a 2nd print, then it’s a second print lol JK JK

            2. 25 A cover isn’t lenticular 02511 barcode. 25 B cover is lenticular but a different cover and a ASM homage 02541 barcode (which is them calling it the 4th variant but it’s the B cover). The 2nd print is the B cover but not lenticular 02512 barcode.

  11. Thank you for putting this together, Alana. Lots of background on Gwen and many firsts. I’d like to take a second to point out a few non-first that shouldn’t be over looked:

Repeating what Garrett said above, ASM Vol 3 #9 is the second appearance of Spider-Gwen. Why do we care? Look at what Ultimate Comics Spider-man #1 is doing right now. Granted UCSM1 is an awesome cover and hard to find in too grade, and Cover A is not either of those…but the variant (comic exposure store variant) does have her, plus a first cover of the Spider-Women crew. There is a color variant and B&W.

Speaking of Spider-Women, Spider-Women Alpha is their official team up book, and the 1:10 cover has always been rare and pricey. But don’t sleep on the cover A Yasmine Putri cover…it rocks as well, and has spiked a few times in the past up to about $25 (I know because I’ve sold quite a few). Spider-Women Omega #1 also is a nice Putri cover, but no spec otherwise. Both nice cheap books for the PC for Spider-Gwen fans.

And last but not least Let’s not forget about her first solo title book. Spider-Gwen #1…1st and 2nd prints are pretty abundant, but the third print is scarce. A raw NM copy 3rd print recently sold for $65 on eBay this past weekend. I bought the other 3rd print which came with a 3rd print of issue #2 for $60 a few hours before that sale. Like Miles’s first solo series is climbing, expect this one to climb as well in future years…it’s a pretty cool cover which reminds me of Into the Spiderverse movie…so a bit of nostalgia there.

    Have any of these, Alana?
