Poyo’s Spec & Drek for August 26th, 2020

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, where we pick the winners each week we think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

DC Picks

DC has 2nd prints hitting shelves this week for Robin King early appearances.

Dark Nights Death Metal Legends Of The Dark Knights #1 (2nd Printing)
Dark Nights Death Metal #2 (of 6) (2nd Printing)
Dark Nights Death Metal #3 (of 6) (2nd Printing)

I’m not gonna waste your time with pictures of these. Same as the first printing but red themed. I would not go heavy on these. More of a buy a few to stash for the long term gamble. It took several years for Teen Titans #12 2nd print to start rising in value, I expect the same out of these, if that happens.

DC needs to take a note out of Marvel’s playbook and start using interiors or alternate covers to boost those comic book nerds in having nerdgasms over needing these in their possession.

Marvel Picks

Strange Academy #1 (3rd Printing) is the hot series that isn’t a Donny Cates title that is seeing a lot of love on the secondary market. So since Marvel likes to do new cover art for their additional printings, makes these a little more appealing to grab.

Thor #2 gets a 4th Printing. Not as great of a cover than the 3rd print but nevertheless is a new cover. So grab a few and stash them. Black Winter isn’t over and these could still make you some money in the future cause there’s a 5th printing coming for this one already.

A quck honorable mention goes to Immortal Hulk #35 (2nd Printing) which is the sketch variant from Alex Ross. Great covers for the personal collection. Not sure if this one will ever becomes a big profit type of book, just love the raw sketch (not the black and white ink version they call sketches)..

Indie & Small Publisher Picks

Canto II Hollow Men #1 (of 5) is back with a new volume. Great series, great story telling along with awesome interior artwork makes a great book.

There’s also a pretty slick TMNT Homage cover that’s a 1:10 Ratio Variant that one should not pass up if you’re a Canto fan and or TMNT fan.

The 1:20 variant is also really slick but unless you find at cover, I don’t think it’s a $30+ cover. Might want to wait as you might be able to snag a deal on the secondary market after some time passes.

Spawn #309 Gunslinger Variant B has Spawn Fans Panties all knotted up with excitement. Pre-sales of this book are doing well and Midtown went out of stock temporarily but now have them back in stock at the bargain price of only $25 each.

I foresee the prices dropping on these on the secondary market (now people want to undercut Midtown to dump these off) but Midtown will sit on their price until the sun swallows up Earth in several billion years. Cause you know, it’s perfectly fine for shops to “raise” their prices to how they want (usually based on secondary market values) but they never seem to drop those prices according to the secondary market.

The “pick it up cause it’s a great read” goes to That Texas Blood #3 this week out of Image. Great new series that’s a slow build up of what has the making of a great show in the near future. I’ve been really digging the covers for these as well.

Mirka Andolfo Mercy #5 (of 6) is the other reader book. Great story, great artwork. Just too bad it’s only a 6 issue series but hopefully it comes back with a new volume and story when it concludes with Mercy #6.

There’s also a pretty bad ass Tony Daniel B B&W Cover as well for this issue.

As a huge Mega Man fan, I’m excited that Mega Man Fully Charged finally comes out (despite getting an early review copy), but I’m not that excited about BOOM! doing so many covers (while most are the same one with silver and gold..  meh). I’m sticking with just Cover A myself. Also, I prefer my Mega Man in full manga style like the last Udon series, where you read from right to left..

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work. The book to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at ratio inflated prices.

Do not buy every copy of Three Jokers coming out of DC this week. Pick the cover you like best and leave it at that and if you’re not sure which cover, always bet on Cover A.

  1. If my LCS gets “legends” 2nd print I’m gonna get it since apparently my shop was robbed of all DC comics that week…gonna pick up 3 covers of 3 jokers, maybe that spawn cover because it looks nice to me, that Texas blood apparently has never shown up even though my shop has ordered but I have read it….elsewhere

      1. Dj’s collectibles in Hanford California, idk with lunar thumb missed books maybe 3 weeks total but shops around me seem to get the books in

  2. I ordered one of the Spawn from Midtown,I know it will not be on store shelves for cover on Wednesday at least not at my stores.thanks for heads up

  3. Nice to have a fairly “light” week as the last few weeks have been pretty heavy and 9/2 looks pretty heavy as well.

  4. Also enjoying That Texas Blood quite a bit. The art is great, story so far has me very interested to see what comes next. Jacob Phillips is definitely a chip off the old block.

  5. That Texas Blood – great story. Love the artwork. Excited to see where it goes. Every week at my LCS I snag another copy of issue #1. I think this one is a winner.
