Poyo’s Spec & Drek for March 17th, 2021

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, the 11th edition for 2021. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

It’s a lighter week it seems. Maybe all the publishers are on Spring Break this week.

Marvel Picks

Iron Fist Heart of Dragon #3. Just love this cover. I have yet to read this title as I’m not normally a big Iron Fist fan but hoping anyone who is reading it can chime in if it’s worthy or not.

Star Wars High Republic #1 4th printing. Just a must pickup for any fan and those putting together complete sets (I’m one of those people) of this title.

DC Picks

Naomi’s home world villain makes an appearance, which makes this Justice League #59 semi important I think. Could cause some more love for Naomi’s solo title.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

I’m a huge fan of Stokoe’s work, so this new Dark Horse title is a definite check out as he’s doing it all.

Orphan and the Five Beasts #1

Night Hunters #2 is out this week. Seems like forever since the first issue came out but I enjoyed it along with Ziritt’s artwork. Also, I really like the smell of this book. It smells indie. They always seem to have a distinctive smell to them.

Maniac of New York #1 gets a second printing.

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

The book(s) to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at inflated prices, whether it’s false demand, pump and dump or out of FOMO.

Superman Red & Blue #1. I sure hope the interior and writing is better than the covers for these. I mean, I normally like Gary Frank’s work and Bermejo as well. These just aren’t that good. I’m not that familiar with Amano but seems like his style is more for the alt museum type of piece, not comic book cover art.

  1. The Amano cover for Superman Red & Blue is by Japanese fine artist & character designer Yoshitaka Amano, who is best known as the concept designer for the Final Fantasy game franchise and the illustrator of the Vampire Hunter D novels. His previous work in American comics includes the Elektra and Wolverine: The Redeemer graphic novel and Sandman: The Dream Hunters graphic novel.
