April Previews 2022 – Small Publisher Spotlight Books

Previews gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Here’s the spotlight new books (and some trade/hardcovers/omnibuses) coming out of April Previews for the small publishers like Dark Horse, IDW and Image Comics…

The Lonesome Hunters #1 – I like Crook’s work. If you liked Harrow County, you’ll probably like this series, I hope.

“From Russ Manning Award-winning and Eisner-nominated Harrow County cocreator Tyler Crook comes this supernatural fantasy about loss, power, and destiny. An old and out-of-practice monster hunter in hiding crosses paths with a young girl that forces him to confront these chaotic creatures. As the beasts invade their tenement, they set off on a supernatural road trip to stop these ancient evils in a story that explores the ways that youth informs adulthood and how early traumas can haunt us of in old age. o Coming-of-age fantasy adventure!”

If you enjoy Scott’s writing for Star Wars, you’ll probably want to check out his new title at Dark Horse called The Ward #1.

“From the writer of Star Wars: The High Republic comes an intense medical drama brimming with fairies, trolls, and real human pathos. St. Lilith’s is a secret hospital for supernatural creatures. The personnel are overworked and the facility is underfunded. It’s a place, and a life, Dr. Nat Reeves thought she left behind. Until a wounded woman (with a tail) appears on her doorstep.”

If you missed out on the floppy copies of Apache Delivery Service or you just wanted to save some money, you can pre-order Apache Delivery Service TPB.

“Two haunted men are on a hunt in the jungles of Vietnam searching for clues to a missing treasure trove of gold that was stolen from all over Asia by a Japanese general during World War II. Eventually they find a series of hidden caves in the mountains near the coast. Bodies start showing up-murder victims and mutilated corpses. As our warriors travel deeper into the mystery they learn more disturbing facts about each other and become paranoid of one another as they get closer and closer to the gold, while, at the same time, a bizarre serial killer is hunting them down. Collects the four-issue miniseries.”

Tales from Harrow County: Lost Ones #2 – Just mentioned above with Crook’s new title, for fans of Harrow County this new tale is a likely must.

Didn’t bother buying all those high priced floppies? You can save some money by buying the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Last Ronin Hardcover at a pretty decent discount compared to the regular copies. Is it me or did it seem like this mini-series took ages to finally finish? What was it, almost two years to do all 5 issues? Instead of pulling out the floppies, just buy the hardcover to read it all in one sitting.

Beware the Eye of Odin #1 (of 4) – Looks interesting and I’ve enjoyed Wagner’s other recent works with Plastic and Vinyl.

“VINYL and PLASTIC creator DOUG WAGNER returns with artist TIM ODLAND and colorist MICHELLE MADSEN to bring you a tale of Vikings, Trolls, Frost Giants, and Valkyries. When a Viking prince finds the Eye of Odin, he must return it to its rightful owner or face a death of boils and decay. By his side are a one-armed warrior past his prime and a female warrior convinced she’s a Valkyrie. Monstrous mayhem ensues.”

Closet #1 (of 3) – For you Tynion fans. He seems to be taking on a lot of projects lately. When this happens, a lot of writers seem to lose quality of their work when they’re trying to write multiple titles and books at the same time. So I’m gonna count this as a hit or miss but probably worth a checkout for a lot of folks.

I like Soule and Browne teaming up on works so Eight Billion Genies #2 (of 8) continues their new title from Image Comics.

Love a good Chip Z book and he’s got Public Domain #1 coming down the release pipeline.

“Syd Dallas is responsible for pop culture’s greatest hero: THE DOMAIN! But his sons Miles and David have a complicated relationship with both the creation and their creator. Can they convince their dad to fight for their family’s legacy? This fun and heartfelt series written and illustrated by Eisner winner CHIP ZDARSKY (SEX CRIMINALS, Daredevil) explores a WILD ALTERNATE WORLD where comic book creators aren’t properly acknowledged or compensated for their creations!! Crazy, I know!! Hi, it’s me, CHIP! I’m writing this solicitation!”

Sins of Black Flamingo #1 (of 5) – Hit or miss. Lots of praise from other creators though. I guess we’ll see.

“OCCULT NOIR. MIAMI SLEAZE. Sebastian Harlow is the Black Flamingo, a flamboyant and narcissistic thief who gets his kicks stealing mystic artifacts from the wealthy and corrupt of Miami’s occult underground. When his latest job leads him to his biggest score so far, the hedonistic outlaw discovers something he wasn’t looking for-something to believe in. ”Be Gay, Do Crimes’ as pure pop art. This outlaw occultist queer heist book goes for your throat, your heart, your groin, and your wallet, and will leave you covered in glitter and feathers, absolutely breathless.’ -KIERON GILLEN (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, DIE) ‘SINS OF THE BLACK FLAMINGO is a drop-dead gorgeous, funny, and sexy book! Within pages you immediately know that Sebastian Harlow is the most exciting new character in years! Dripping with WHEELER’s wit and looking fabulous thanks to stunning work by MOORE and BONVILLAIN, you’re going to want more immediately!’ -CHIP ZDARSKY (SEX CRIMINALS, Daredevil)”

I tend to like Daniel Warren Johnson. So I’ll be checking out Do a Powerbomb #1 (of 7) (Cover A – Johnson) for sure but I”m usually not impressed with wrestling themed stories. So he better entertain me..
