CovrPrice.Com Runners-Up for Week of 5/26/23

As promised, the runners-up list. The second half of the Top 20.

On May 3rd, CGC announced a private signing with Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira. If you’ve followed our past weekly market reports, you would know that Elvira’s key issues and hard-to-find variants have increased in value. This is especially the case for her first comic appearance in this issue, which features a classic Brian Bolland cover. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, captured network TV viewers with a tight-fitting, low-cut, cleavage-displaying black gown and a “Valley girl” satirical and sarcastic tone. As the hostess of b-horror films, she dropped risqué double entendres and joked about her cleavage on national TV. Her popularity soared in the ’80s and turned her into an iconic cult figure of horror. So, along with an organic growing trend of Elvira books increasing in value, this week’s entry is directly influenced by that signing, inspiring fans to purchase books like this to capture her hard-to-get signature. We tracked 11 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 135%, with a high sale of $60 for a VF raw copy.

It was recently announced that Venom 3 has the working title “Orwell,” which many connect to Venom: Lethal Protector and the Life Foundation’s villain of that book, Orwell Taylor. While this issue features the comic origin of Venom, the film altered this Secret Wars event by forming its own origin story. Yet, that little bit of Venom ooze left behind in Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to convince collectors that this is a book to pick up. Granted, this is a VERY loose connection and could just be a modern grail that collectors like to pair with Amazing Spider-Man #300. We tracked 20 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 111%, with a high sale of $650 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $180.

#13 X-MEN #213 | MARVEL | 1987
As we previously noted, the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the inclusion of Mr. Sinister’s genetic experimenting protege, the High Evolutionary, leaves many to believe that Mr. Sinister could already exist in some capacity within the MCU. While it’s a bit early to speculate on anything mutant-related, as we still need The X-Men to appear, that doesn’t stop eager fans from picking up Sinister’s first cameo appearance. We tracked 13 copies sold at a 7-day trend of 160%, with a high sale of $155 for a CGC 9.8 and an NM FMV of $29.

This on-again-off-again issue finds its way back onto the runner-up list. Since it shares a title with the future Marvel film SECRET WARS, this is a steady aftermarket seller amongst speculators and key issue collectors. Along with an iconic cover, this book’s first appearance of the Beyonder marks a character with tremendous potential as Marvel considers their “what to do about Kang” options amidst the legal troubles of actor Jonathan Majors. We tracked 14 copies with a 7-day trend of 138% and a high sale of $330 for a CGC 9.8 copy with an NM FMV of $32.

#15 BATMAN #181 | DC | 1966
Black Cat, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy are four of the comic industry’s top characters that fans love to collect, and artists enjoy drawing. The sheer volume of fantastic covers featuring these powerful women is staggering, and the artwork features some of the best work for fan-favorite creators. Poison Ivy’s first appearance has quickly gained significant market traction by this alone. However, she’s a proven threat in the DC universe with incredible cinematic potential. Investing in this plant goddess is a safe investment. We tracked 10 copies sold at a 7-day trend of 192%, with a high sale of $2,340 for a CGC 5.5 and a raw VG value of $525.

#16 SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 | MARVEL | 1992
Spider-Man 2099 in the upcoming ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE looks incredible. He’s set to be a big player in the forthcoming film and could be a big player for years. But remember that many who will see the film have yet to learn who this character is, and this will be the first glimpse they see, which could lead to an active aftermarket. Heck, since his end-credit cameo in the first movie, we’ve already seen a drastic sales increase for this book. The price is still tolerable, which is excellent for the community as more aim to acquire his first solo outing! We tracked 20 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 88%, with a high sale of $124.99 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $12.

The first appearance of Miles Morales is a modern grail for many collectors. Luckily, it’s prevalent but still enjoys a high asking price. But, let’s be honest, Miles is everywhere, and soon to be more so with the release of ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE. Not to mention a PS5 exclusive game, playing an integral part in the Spider-Man 2 game and being a face of young Marvel IP to boot. Miles is here to stay, as are his fans! We tracked 16 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 99%, with a high sale of $1,625 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $643.

Venom is arguably one of the most famous villains (or anti-heroes) of all time, fully appearing for the first time in this book with an incredible cover by an artist with a cult following. Acquiring this book has many collectors happy to part with their cash and propel it back onto our list! We tracked 15 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 106%, with a high sale of $3,950 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $671.

Collectors sure do love Star Wars. They love first appearances too, and this book features one in Dr. Cuata. Renowned for his expertise in Kyber crystals, his research also inspired Galen Erso, the architect of the Death Star and star of Star Wars: Rogue One. Momentum has slowed for this book, but with the connections to the Star Wars franchise’s past, present, and future, fans are still picking up copies at a good clip. We tracked 44 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 110%, with a high sale of $100 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $13.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen this book reach the list, mainly because it has become incredibly expensive! Fair enough, as it is widely considered the first appearance of THE Wolverine, popularized by the incredible performance from Hugh Jackman. Jackman is set to reprise the role in the upcoming DEADPOOL 3, and fans are pumped! This book saw a slight decline until that news came out, and it has been on a sharp incline since. We tracked 17 copies sold at a 7-day trend of 92%, with a high sale of $8,900 for a CGC 9.0 and FN raw FMV of $3,917.
