A look ahead to January, New Comics

Mel does a great job at pointing out the cool new upcoming small press books. There are also some great looking mid to larger publisher books to check out as well. Here are some of the books we are looking forward to in January.

Cry Havoc #1 Image Comics- 1/27/16: BEHOLD THE MODERN MONSTROSITY. X-Men Legacy writer SIMON SPURRIER and superstar artist RYAN KELLY present fiends, fragility, and firepower in an all-new series, mixing the hard-boiled militaria of Jarhead with the dark folklore of Pan’s Labyrinth. Includes an unprecedented use of multiple colorists (MATT WILSON, LEE LOUGHRIDGE, & NICK FILARDI) to define the story’s threads, and an incredible variant cover by Eisner Award winner CAMERON STEWART. This is not the tale of a lesbian werewolf who goes to war. Except it kind of is.

Why I like it: Lesbian werewolves on the prowl. Cool. Also I really dug the rotating artists on Zero so interested on how the use of multiple colorists will interpret the art on this book.

Gutter Magic #1 IDW- 1/20/16: Cinder Byrnes has been trying to lie, cheat, and steal his way into wizardry his entire life, and he’s finally got the key to unlocking the power of magic. But first, he needs to stay one step ahead of the sorcerous crime lord that wants him dead. Writer Rich Douek and Artist Brett Barkley present an action-packed urban fantasy tale, set in a modern New York City where World War II was fought with magic.

Why I like it: Alternate history always fascinates me. The idea of using magic to fight WWII seems like a cool twist.

Mighty Morphing Power Rangers #0 Boom Studios-1/13/15: The Power Rangers franchise is a true multi-generational, worldwide franchises. With its flashy costumes, mecha Zords, and-at its core-a story of superpowered teens who fight against evil alien forces, the Power Rangers are a pop-culture phenomenon that has continued to resonate with fans for over 20 years. As a new film gets ready for release in 2017, we, as huge Power Rangers fans ourselves, are excited to produce a modern Power Rangers comic featuring the characters of the original Mighty Morphin series.

Why I like it: I can watch it with my son and he is enthralled. Power Rangers has become a legacy show being on for 20 years now, I was a junior in college when it first came out and fell in love with the show.

And one for the books shelf:
Roman Ritual TPB Amigo Comics- 1/27/16: Self-exiled priest John Brennan, a troubled exorcist, is summoned to Rome to stop an ancient evil spreading within the Holy See itself. A revolutionary story about possessions and exorcisms, with ties to the Church’s shady past, and a man, almost helpless and alone before the evil that would bring the end of the Catholic Church. Collecting the critically acclaimed four-issue horror miniseries Roman Ritual.

Why I like it: I have been a big fan and proponent for Amigo’s horror comics. Roman Ritual is an awesome series that does give the scares and does it well. If you checked out Straightjacket, you need to check out this earlier El Torres horror series. It can be preordered for $10 here.

  1. Can’t wait for the power rangers. I’ve been trying to look for the original movie but no luck. Target used to have it for $5 but they stopped caring it. Also just finished reading Roman Ritual ( do to my old comic shop getting ripped and bend comics and sending them back and had to buy issue 4 on ebay) and man its crazy how it all falls into place. Such great story and art.
