Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 2/8/17

Each week hundred’s of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 2/8/17:
This is shaping up to be a small week for me. While a lot of returning favorite books are out, not a spec heavy week. With that said, this is the type of week where something can sneak up on you. The Image Homage variants start to drop this week and should be on your radar; East of West #31 and Wicked + the Divine #26 both have variants this week.
Returning Favorites
Birthright #22 -Still one of my favorite reads, Joshua Williamson has created a rich fantasy world and a story filled with twists and turns.
Black Science #28 – Rick Remender has finally started to grab the attention that he deserves. His longer running titles, such as Black Science, should be read. This dimension hopping tale re-invents itself constantly.
Moonshine #5 – Incredible mix of crime and werewolves in a way that works.
Divinity III Shadowman and the Battle for New Stalingrad #1 – The Stalinverse series has been incredible. I am not a big Valiant guy at all, but these Divinity books have really gotten me reading them and liking characters I hadn’t;t cared less about.
On The Cheap
Three New Wolverine $1 books come out, while they won’t have the collector’s draw that the Hulk #181 and Wolverine #1 from last week will have, still look out for the True Believers versions on Wolverine Origin #1, Save The Tiger #1, and Weapon X #1.
The New #2’s
Dollface #2 – the first issue sold really well, but there is a natural drop off point between first issues and the follow ups. Expect this one to be harder to come by than issue 1 as so many people jumped in on the spec of #1.
Marry Me #2 – Not sure that this one will take off the way #1 did, especially since it doesn’t have the ratio variant, but this one still could be in play.
Small Press Gem
Red Sonja #2 J Scott Campbell Cover – Cannot pass up regular priced J Scott Campbell covers. These have come out really nice, and considering JSC is known for drawing similarly styled red heads, this one is right up his wheel house. You do not have to grab the virgin variant to still get nice JSC art, but if you can grab the more rare variant cheaply, so so.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Fissure #1– Tim Daniel has a good following. Couple that with a low print run on Fissure and this could be hard to find with people looking for copies.
Pick of the Week
Death be Damned #1 – Boom has a first look deal for their comics to be picked up for media deals. Many Boom titles in the works right now. This one looks to be ripe for the picking, and a good story to boot.
And in case you missed it, as we have been putting it out earlier, here is the Spec Review Video for this week:

That is it for us this week, let us know what you are spec-ing on.

  1. I almost picked Death Be Damned myself and as a lot of BOOM! books do get media options, I’ve been burned by too many BOOM! books we spec on..

    1. A lot turn out to be good reads though. I was hanging out side Baltimore Retailer Summit BSing with a Retailer I know and got a chance to meet Ross Richie. I liked him. He is producing half the stuff going to film or TV himself.

      1. I enjoy a lot of BOOM! titles to read…. I really digged Klaus, probably one of their best titles last year.

  2. Managed to get hold of a couple of Death be Damned, but can’t find Fissure for love nor money, so I reckon that will heat up very quickly.

  3. I found the first issue of, “Dollface,” to be good, silly fun. I might give the second issue a gander too as another book by creator Dan Mendoza–“Zombie Tramp”–seems to be quite the cult-hit and this comic features that character too, so I imagine that helps stoke the flames of popularity as well!
