Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 162nd edition of the open forum!
So, did anyone get any crazy Black Friday deals? I did my normal Blu-Ray deal where I grab movies cheap and flip them. It has been a great deal for many years.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?
Here are some of my pick ups this week.

I’m putting together an ASM legacy collection, but I know I may never get all those early issues. So I went and bought the ASM Omnibus Vol.1, so I can start reading the entire ASM run from the beginning. I got it for $80 CND on Black Friday. I’ve read the 1st ten issues so far. It is kinda hard to read as the stories are very transparent, but it is really neat to see how Peter and Spidey and the whole cast came to be who they are today. There’s some pretty funny shit in there too. In the 2nd story of ASM #1, Peter Parker is constantly referred to as Peter Palmer. Stan Lee addressed the discrepancy in the letters section of issue #4. Peter Palmer just doesn’t have the same ring to it as Peter Parker does.
I need to continue reading these myself. I started reading ASM when I first got the Marvel Unlimited app about 4 years ago. I think I got up to issue 35 or so…
Maybe ill try and set a goal of reading one per day…. That means I can get through 365 issues in a years time. It’ll only take roughly 2 years to read the entire series.
I got an Animosity #1 b/w sketch CGC 9.8 for $30. It’s not too much coming out tomorrow that I’m interested in. I was wondering about something and I’m sure you guys should know. Is there any spec potential on foreign versions/ copies of American comics?
I’ve never seen the appeal and demand for foreign books from their American counter parts.
I just recently ordered a couple. I’ll let you guys know what when they come in.
From what I have seen there is some appeal for Key books, but Market is small and usually select. Like I only due German Mickey Mouse issues..lol.
Oh, I’d be more inclined to buy older books, not moderns. But the appeal for me is even non-existent currently.
I think there is a collectors market for sure.
Yes, to a smaller crowd though.
Pleasantly surprised with the Earth X crossover, it makes a better Justice League movie than the actual Justice League film. Also Runaways so far is alright as well.
Small week. Not even going to go to my LCS today. I just asked for my stuff to be left for me for next week.
Today’s pulls are:
Batman annual #2
Image + #4
Manifest destiny #32
My weeks are getting smaller and smaller too at the local shop. But I still get reader copies for the most part from Midtown on a bi-weekly/monthly delivery schedule from pre-orders (yeah, 35% off, can’t beat that).
I’m on a mission to try and gather up what I want to keep in PC for the long haul (I bought boxes I’m using to seal tight, all books gonna get shoved in mylar with full archive grade backer board; index the contents so I know what’s inside each box and some silica packets to control humidity in each one) and get rid of the rest sitting in boxes, doing nothing. I’m thinking probably at least 80% is gonna get gone.. hopefully.. we’ll see.
Maybe my long term plans will result in a really nice collection decades from now to dump at a nice profit… or give to grandkids unless I’m already dead, then I don’t care, cause I’ll be dead.
Silica packs. What a great idea. I’m going to start hoarding those!
I’m trying to get more selective about what new series I start collecting because I have a difficult time dropping titles once I’ve started.
Yes… It sounds as if you have a comic addiction like the rest of us.
They make large moisture collectors you can get in hardware stores. I use them in conjunction with a dehumidifier
Check your local sporting goods store for desiccant packs. They have a large selection that I use in my gun safe. You can throw them in the oven also to recharge them. Usually 200 degrees for 3 hours for most, and they’ll last a month or more before recharging is needed again. It’ll save you some money over the long run.
I already ordered some rechargeable ones off Amazon, $15. 🙂
I’ve still buy lots of readers every week. If I grow tired of a book, or if Romita Jr. starts doing interiors, I drop it and then list the series on eBay at a discount to try and get some money back while also purging needless books from my collection. I collect for my PC; McFarlane art, Jock art, Batman and Detective keys and certain story arcs, Harley and Joker stuff, Wolverine and X23 keys and certain story arcs, ASM 300 cover swipes, other favourite covers, spidey symbiote stuff, some small Indy titles that I like, some XMen keys and story arcs, as well as putting together an ASM collection. Everything else gets purged. Mind you, my purge pile is growing. Can’t sell it as fast as I collect it. Lol.
Lol. Your jrjr line was too funny jayclue!
I’m going to put a dehumidifier in my Xmas list now.
Thanks for all the good advice everyone! In all these years I’ve never given any serious thoughts to moisture.
Now that I think of it, I should probably go get those longboxes out of the pool!
I’m in the process of doing the same thing myself. Getting all my PC books sealed into Mylar…..never to be opened again. I’ve got 1 and a half longboxes so far.
Pickups this week-
Batman Annual #2
Batman Creature of The Night #1 (of 4) Graveland #3
Moon Knight #189
Old Man Logan #31
Sacred Creatures #5 Cvr A Raimondi
Spider-Gwen #26
Super Sons Annual #1
Looks like it will be just Rick & Morty 32 this week. I thought about Mystik U but the $5.99 price is a deal breaker for me for another Book of Magic/Harry Potter/Gotham Academy rehash.
I did recently bid on a 9.8 Batman Secrets 3 SS (awesome Sam Kieth Joker cover and signature) but stopped when the bidding went above the going rate for 9.9’s non signature.
Never over pay!
Another small week in terms of pick ups:
Batman Annual X2
Reactor (love me some Donny Cates!!!)
Kill or Be Killed
Sacred Creatures
BTW, did anyone read Thanos 13 last week? I thought it was awesome! Love the new Ghost Rider and will be in for the rest of Cates’ run. Doctor Strange 381 was also interesting and will give it another 1-2 issues to see where it goes.
No spec pick ups from last week…
Good hunting everyone!
I missed Reactor #1. Didn’t know Donny was writing that one. I’ll have to check my LCS tomorrow. I loved Thanos #13. I’m going to keep reading this as long as Donny is writing it. Doctor Strange #381 was good. I also will give this 1-2 more issues to see where it goes.
Ive been reading the Thanos series but haven’t read issue 13 yet. I’m excited to see what Cates does in the Marvel Universe.
My Poison Elves original art came today. I’ll have to buy a frame and find some wall space.
Almost picked up the JLA Lobo Annual by Kelley Jones but I really have no interest in a team-up with Black Canary.
A light(er) week by my standards. Missed out on a couple of books (Reactor, John Wick), but picked up most of what I wanted. Also placed an order with Scout Comics on Monday to fill in what I’ve been missing since my LCS rarely orders their books.

Most annuals are.
I sold the two I bought.
