From our friend Dakoit at Dakoit’s Comic Book Speculation Blogspot
Hey Everyone,
Happy Victoria Day long weekend from Canada! This weekend was a great one to be a comic fan and go to the movies. With Captain America, Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Godzilla all going strong in the box office, I finally had the chance to get caught up on all three. Godzilla and Captain America rocked, and ASM #2 fell a little flat. Hey, that’s quite ok, because even if it wasn’t great, there has never been a better time when we’re lucky enough to see our ‘Spidey’ gracing the silver screen every few years.
It’s just unbelievable that the summer block buster movie season has just started; we still have X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy and so many others on way. I’m a professed Cruise fan (ya I just said that), and enthusiastic for Edge of Tomorrow! Also Transformers: Age of Extinction, TMNT, Sin City: Dame to Kill For and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes all look killer.
The first ‘Apes’ completely took me by surprise and makes my top ten sci-fi movies of all time. In addition to the amazing motion capture CGI, the character building was so well done, and story plot was strong. I cannot wait for the sequel. With all these popcorn flicks and more, I hope you do get some vitamin D (ie. sunlight….w/ sunscreen min. SPF 30), exercise and fresh air as well, that’s my salubrious advice to all of you this summer. 😉
This week sees some interesting #1’s from very small publishers, but quickly takes a back seat to the past release section below! A couple comics have sent speculators in a frenzy, and hopefully get you pumped to go hunting! So let’s get started!
With literally hundreds of comic books hitting the LCS each week, it can be daunting task for a collector to decide which to buy. That’s where I come in! Scouring the web to bring you the most promising comics I see for investment, I give you my Dakoit Weekly Speculation Hit List! Enjoy!
1. Invincible #111 (Image), $ 2.99
Releasing: May 21st 2014
WHY? Right on the heels of a very controversial issue (#110), which saw prices reaching $40, now fetching $10-15 on Ebay: Invincible #110
This new direction will be a very dark segment of the Invincible mythos, and may see demand for the book rise after several years of flying under the radar. I guess we often forget that this is Kirkman’s first child, and this title has been one of the longest running most successful of all Image titles.
Synopsis: THE WALKING DEAD CREATOR ROBERT KIRKMAN WRITES INVINCIBLE!!! A new beginning for INVINCIBLE as things take a turn down a dark path. Everything changes as Invincible is betrayed by one of his own. You won’t want to miss this explosive issue #1… 1… 1! It packs the punch of THREE relaunched number one issues! IN ONE BOOK! (TFAW)
Invincible #111
2. Last Broadcast #1 (Boom! Studios), $3.99
Releasing: May 21st 2014
WHY? Unique concept, and the art looks to be edgy and unique. There will be a small print run for this one.
Synopsis: WHY WE LOVE IT: Ever wonder what’s behind that ‘No Trespassing’ sign? We do! Co-creators André Sirangelo and Gabriel Iumazark takes us deep into the renegade world of urbEx (urban exploration). Throw in a decades-old conspiracy involving vaudeville magicians and occult spiritualists and you’ve got us hooked.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: The cunning, daredevil urbEx members of Backbone will win you over as the ragtag, Ocean’s Eleven-style crew of the sewers and abandoned warehouses. Iumazark’s Brazilian/Japanesefusion indie art style brings edgy energy to every dark corner. And fans of THIEF OF THIEVES and the film NOW YOU SEE ME will find comparisons to entice them.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: An urban spelunking group in San Francisco discovers a secret bunker belonging to the long-vanished 1930s stage magician Blackhall the Incredible at the same time as young, out-of-work magician Ivan receives a mysterious package that points him toward a possible conspiracy involving Blackhall’s death in 1934. Both groups dive into the mystery, not yet realizing that it’s about the change their lives forever. (TFAW)

WHY? The Miller Machine puts out yet another comic. This time, a topic more familiar to the Miller comics of past, exploring super-powers/heroes in a different light. If it’s in the tradition of Nemesis or Kick-Ass, should be ultra violent with crass mayhem. 7 regular priced variant covers.
Synopsis:The all-new Millarworld Universe kicks into high gear with the launch of Millar and Fegredo’s fast and furious miniseries. When a group of hard-luck teens in Motor City stumble upon a street drug called MPH, they gain the power of super speed.
Will they use it to save the world? Hell no! Not when there’s dolla, dolla bills to be had, y’all. A high-octane urban adventure, MPH brings you super speed like you’ve never seen before!
This launch features a variant cover by Jock, a blank cover variant, and a special series of linked cover variants by Fegredo showcasing the book’s cast. (TFAW)

When a strange plague gives every human being on the planet special powers, it’s seen as the next step in human evolution. But hope quickly turns to terror, as every war, terrorist attack, every crime, every simple street argument escalates a truly horrific point. The world is tearing itself apart – every trouble spot becomes a monstrous war zone and nuclear Armageddon looms. The plague must be cured if humankind is to survive. The key lies in the blood of the only human being who didn’t get powers when the plague hit: A downtrodden, recently divorced New York plumber named Michael Fisher. Grimm Fairy Tales: Warlord of Oz #1 of 6 (Cover A – Finch)
In closing,
Invincible #111 will be under-ordered as most stores have cut back on Invincible since the early years, even with all the hype over the past issue, there won’t be enough to go around, I would say grab 1 copy, good to have as the overall story does continue from #110 and the series may heat up again with this issue.
The Last Broadcast #1 seems like a unique premise but it being a limited, leave on shelves if you don’t want to read.
Same goes for MPH #1, it being another Miller comic nowadays don’t achieve much demand in the after market. Leave on shelves unless you like reading his stuff. I personally have enjoyed Jupiter’s Legacy, but that title is so terribly delayed.
Ordinary #1 is another cool premise, but again it’s only 3 issues, even if it’s from a small time publisher and a micro print run, I would leave on shelves for now.
Itty Bitty Bunnies In Rainbow Pixie Land #1 will be the toss up for the week, it’s from a small time publisher and will be hard to find in many stores, pick up 1-2 copies if you can find them. It also seems to be an ongoing.
Superman Adventures #5 and Action Comics #835 have been on top of the speculator treasure hunt for the last several weeks. I didn’t post these two books on my blog earlier due to my apprehension of the peculiar nature of why these have now become hot back issues. At this point, they no longer can be ignored as true back issue keys. Live Wire’s history has been very similar to the ever popular anti-hero darling, Harley Quinn. Live Wire’s 1st appearance, was in the Warner Brother Superman Adventures animated series and she then transcended the cartoon based comic towards the DC continuity. I recently found that she also appeared in the series CW tv series Smallville. There have also been rumors that she will make an appearance in the New 52 shortly. Find these immediately in unsuspecting LCSs, there should be some still left in back issue bins. If you have a little more cash, maybe grab some on Ebay. At this point, even if her rise to popularity is inexplicable, if she continues gaining momentum (Cosplay), we may be looking at the new ‘Harley Quinn’ type character for the Man of Steel. Prices of her first appearances will soar.
Five Ghosts #1 can still be found on Ebay for very attainable prices, and you may even find some at LCS. Go grab several copies, if this becomes a show this comic will be huge.
This is the first time I’ve listed an Invincible comic on my hitlist, and I guess under poignant circumstances. The first appearance of Anissa has taken off for a despicable act on our male titular character. Although Anissa is an ugly individual, it also makes her an arch enemy for the likes we haven’t seen in the series, and possibly the most visceral as well. Grab this issue if they are still left in back issue bins. They will be hard to find for sure.
Swamp Thing #67 is self explanatory, go through ST bins to grab this gem!
The Grimm Fairy Tales: Warlord Of Mars #1 won’t be a back issue scorcher, even with the talents providing various regular priced variants. I would grab a copy if you like the cover. If you’re not into the covers, leave on shelves.
Lot’s of back issues to go hunting for this week. Good luck.
Until Next week…

Looks like Invincible 111 is selling for 8-10 already.
Not sold listings so far, just the regular cover is selling for about retail. There seems to be a bunch of $8 type listings that include all 3 covers in the sale. The Diamond Summit Sketch Variant seems to be selling well but that’s likely due to it being a little harder to find.
FYI, Invincible #111 is still available at Midtown. The Ottley Sketch Variant seems it’s going to sell well, seeing some finished auctions and current ones at the $8 or more.
