Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

Hawking HC GN

From his early days at Oxford, Stephen Hawking’s brilliance and good humor were obvious to everyone he met.

At twenty-one he was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that limited his ability to move and speak, though it did nothing to limit his mind. He went on to do groundbreaking work in cosmology and theoretical physics for decades after being told he had only a few years to live.

Through his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time, and his appearances on shows like Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory, Hawking became a household name and a pop-culture icon. In Hawking, Jim Ottaviani and Leland Myrick have crafted an intricate portrait of the great thinker, the public figure, and the man behind both identities.

I’m a big science nerd. I’ve subscribed to Scientific American for like 15 years now. So this is right up my alley.

If it reads anything like Logicomix: The Epic Search for Truth then I’ll be very happy.

This was a great graphic novel that followed the philosopher Betrand Russell. Not entirely scientific but nonetheless a great read. It was one of those books I couldn’t put down once I started reading it.

This next pick is another scientific type book I’m wanting to check out since I’m a big Apollo space program nerd. I just love all space things.

Moonbound: Apollo 11 and the Dream of Spaceflight

On a summer night in 1969, two men climbed down a ladder onto a sea of dust at the edge of an ancient dream. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on lunar soil, the moon ceased to be a place of mystery and myth. It became a destination.

Now, on the fiftieth anniversary of that journey, Moonbound tells the monumental story of the moon and the men who went there first. With vibrant images and meticulous attention to detail, Jonathan Fetter-Vorm conjures the long history of the visionaries, stargazers, builders, and adventurers who sent Apollo 11 on its legendary voyage.

From the wisdom of the Babylonians to the intrigues of the Cold War, from the otherworldly discoveries of Galileo to the dark legacy of Nazi atrocities, from the exhilarating trajectories of astronauts—recounted in their own words—to the unsung brilliance of engineers working behind the scenes, Moonbound captures the grand arc of the Space Age in a graphic history of unprecedented scope and profound lyricism.

Disney Frankenstein, starring Donald Duck TPB

An electrifying adaptation of the classic novel by Mary Shelley! Donald Duck is Doctor Victor von Duckenstein–a doctor with a talent for the art of creation.

Drawing inspiration from old books of science, Victor finds the means to make his vision into a reality.

Through countless experiments, Victor conceives a breathing, living creature of horrible sight with intentions unknown. What has Victor created, and what does this creature want?

I love bathroom reading material but that’s not to knock this book, it just looks like a great book to have in hand when you know, you’re off doing your business.

Laugh if you want but it’s already sold out at Midtown so I’m not the only one grabbing this book.

That wraps up this weeks trade and hardcover picks. What trades or hardcovers are you planning on picking up or have been reading outside of your normal floppy comic pickups and pulls?
