Please help me in welcoming Lucas to CHU and the variants of the week post. Lucas will be covering for the time being now that Mel is on hiatus. So on to Lucas’ first variant picks.
BERSERKER UNBOUND #2 (OF 4) CVR B SORRENTINO
I absolutely love Jeff Lemire. Old Man Logan, Animal Man, X-Men, Moon Knight, but Lemire’s writing takes a backseat to Deodato’s artwork in this series. Breathtaking full-page spreads. Estimated print run: 5,000 Pivot Point: As of today 50 copies have sold but just at cover price.
SOMETHING IS KILLING CHILDREN #1 FOC FRISON VAR
Something is killing the Children #1 is probably the worst kept secret, because weeks before the first issue came out Boom! Studios announced that the comic was being extended to a more permanent from a five-issue limited series, because of a last minute 170 % increase in order from retailers (most likely because of the Jenny Frison Cover C). If that isn’t enough of a vote in confidence it was also announced that the series would going to a fourth printing. Once again that was a week before the first issue was even released. Estimated print run: 10,000 Pivot Point: As of today 40 copies has sold for $20.00 Shipping included.
WEB OF BLACK WIDOW #1 (OF 5) 1:50 CHIODO HIDDEN GEM VAR
Estimated print run: less than 1,000. Pivot Point: As of today, there isn’t enough data to make a call, but the data we do have would put it around $110. Though I’m sure there will be plenty available for ratio. Before you go any higher, it might be better to consider investing in the Black Widow Keys such as Tales of Suspense 52, 1st Black Widow which is still pretty cheap.
Absolute Carnage Scream #2 Cover C Incentive Declan Shalvey Codex Variant Cover
MIDNIGHT VISTA #1 10 COPY RAHZZAH INCV
‘Midnight Vista’ centers around Oliver Flores who claims he was abducted by aliens, while he was on a ice cream run with his creepy stepdad. I am excited for this title, as part of the greater Sci-fi genre, this a great edition, and I hope it can keep up this pace. There are a lot of covers and store variants out for Midnight Vista #1 but the one that I will be targeting is the Cover B Incentive Rahzzah Variant Cover. Estimated print run: less than 2,000. Pivot Point: As of today, there isn’t enough data to make a call, but there are multiple copies for available $25-30 but the actual price that moves it is $15.
Section Zero Vol 2 #6 Cover B Variant Adam Hughes Cover
Lois Lane Vol 2 #3 Cover B Variant Nicola Scott Cover
Going To The Chapel #1 Cover C Variant Gavin Guidry Cover
SPAWN #300 CVR Mcfarlane Virgin
Estimated print run: less than 2,500. Pivot Point: As of today, there isn’t enough data to make a call, but what we do would put it around $110. Though I’m sure there will be plenty available for ratio.
2 covers giving readers the “shhh” pose. Or is the alien showing us its probing finger since it has no mouth? Thanks effort good stuff!
It’s kinda weird the second finger is the exact same position someone pulled a Mattina.
Found the original where the alien photo is swiped from.

Would call that a swipe…
Neither would I.

There is no “estimated print run”. Print run numbers arent given out. And order numbers arent available until next month. So trying to say a certain book, that comes out tomorrow, has a certain number of copies “printed” is VERY misleading. Cant tell if the author of this article is trying to sell or pump certain books …..
Yes, there is an estimated print run. Lucas just gave it to us. Saying something is an estimate is not misleading. An estimate, by definition is a rough calculation/judgement. Personal and subjective. Perhaps he could have given a quick formula of how he came to his estimate, but I do not see that sentence as misleading at all. Im pretty sure that Spawn #300 has been pumped as much as possible by the Toddfather. Very hard to point fingers at this book for any sort of p’n’d.
A print run can’t be estimated before Diamond releases their numbers and they are posted by Comichron. If it read “complete guess of print run”, the statement would be fine, but there is really no truth to back these estimations up as of now.
es·ti·mate
verb
/ˈestəˌmāt/
roughly calculate or judge the value, number, quantity, or extent of.
“the aim is to estimate the effects of macroeconomic policy on the economy”
synonyms: roughly calculate, approximate, make an estimate of, guess, evaluate, judge, gauge, reckon, rate, appraise, form an opinion of, form an impression of, get the measure of, determine
Yes. By definition, an estimate can be made at any time. The word ‘guess’ is a synonym of the word ‘estimate’. So, Lucas’ sentence that reads ‘estimated print run’, could also read as ‘my guess at the print run’.
Thank You Jay
The author can estimate whatever he wants, but there are several problems with it.
1. The term “estimate” in comics is commonly associated with Comichron. For people who are used to reading estimates but not knowing where they come from, they might believe this is an official estimate. It is not.
2. The “estimate” is coming out of thin air seemingly, with no methodology explained for its arrival whatsoever. For people looking to speculate, this should be noted and explained, as the methodology used to obtain the “estimate” is most likely flawed, or at the very least not transparent enough to debate at all.
I can “estimate” that Spawn 300 will sell 200,000 copies and have 4 k 1:50 variants out there. Is my estimate right or wrong? Who knows, as I didn’t explain how I arrived at it. That’s a major problem for estimating value on spec.
I agree with everything you have said, except, the comichron numbers. People do use Comichron to estimate ratio variants, but for the regular print, I believe people dont refer to Comichrons numbers as estimates. Comichrons numbers are regarded as hard numbers, not estimates (although they are simply very educated estimates based on real sales data), imo.
Im liking that Berserker #2 Sorrentino.
Frison is in a deep JSC rut. Every cover of hers is now looking more and more like something she did in the recent past. An unoriginal, limited style, imo.
great job Lucas !
Good job Lucas on the first article – M!STER D on YouTube … you know who it is
Nice work, some interesting new ideas, thanks
Frick in Love ghat Black Widow cover! Love it!
That midnight Vista alien is a shape shifter. He shifts into Lois Lane #3.
It’s a secret crossover event! LOL
Great job Lucas
Great article! I love that Frison cover
Lucas’s numbers for estimated print run match’s the data I have available give or take a few hundred. Whether either of us is accurate remains to be seen. Once Comichron posts the results we will know for certain.
Meant to add that his estimates for Spawn 300 matched what i had, not for the entire article ?
I think hes Little over on something is killing the children.
Job well done sir. I see you stay true to what you have been saying you like for a while. I hope these will be hot picks!
