Things I Like and Don’t Like for the Week of September 18th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of September 18th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Hellmouth

BOOM! is doing another Buffy series and the first issue has FOC tomorrow. But there’s a foil cover that a lot of retailers might not get unless they’re registered retailer with BOOM!.

Here’s what it actually says when retailers go to order this Foil Variant.

“NOTE: BOOM! Guaranteed for registered retailers. Retailers purchasing 15 copies or more Buffy the Vampire Slayer Angel HELLMOUTH #1 [any comb] unlock unlimited ordering of Buffy Angel HELLMOUTH #1 UNLOCK LAMBERT FOIL VAR”

Now I’m no Buffy fan and I don’t recall seeing even my local shops going heavy on any previous Buffy series so this book could be a winner if it’s only going to be guaranteed for the registered retailers with BOOM!.

We all know how BOOM! handled the additional printings (Did you all stumble upon the letter from BOOM! about it? They pretty much slapped speculators in it.) for Once & Future so if they botch this one for retailers and consumers, could be the book to try and obtain come October.

You can pre-order from TFAW or Pymcomics. I confirmed with Pymccomics they are registered with BOOM!. I’d imagine TFAW is registerd but that’s an unknown. FOC is tomorrow on this book. If you love Buffy and don’t want to order online, better confirm with your local shop if they’re a registered retailer with BOOM! to get your copy.

Spawn Record Breaking Issue Shenanigans

Okay McFarlane, we get it, issue 301 is the new record breaking independent longest running comic ever…  or something like that.

But do you have to put that on the cover art? Just feels cheesy to me. Thanks to JayClue for pointing this out. I wasn’t going to say anything but it’s nice to know I’m not the only person who feels like it’s just kind of silly to plaster that crap and then draw Spawn holding up a Crown..

Buy the cover you like best but McFarlane made it easy for some on what cover not to buy I think.

All this Spawn hoopla and covers, with McFarlane mentioning he’s now the record holder reminds me of that Big Bang Theory episode when Wolowitz kept reminding people he’s an astronaut and makes references to it every chance he gets until Rajesh sends him a video of Buzz Aldrin..

McFarlane, don’t be like Buzz Aldrin…

LEGO Lunchbox

Alright, it’s not comic book related but the only thing else that I’m really digging this week is LEGO is promoting a LEGO Lunchbox that’s free to any purchase over $99.

Holidays are coming up soon and I love buying LEGO’s for the kids and myself as presents. But honestly I’m trying to justify buying some LEGO’s just to get this lunchbox.

LEGO has been known to do great promotional items that resell very well on the aftermarket. Keep or sell to make your purchase a little less expensive.

That’s all I got this week. What’s grinding your gears this week? Tell us here or on the forums.

  1. i got something to complain about
shops that send emails for shop exclusives before even diamond initial ordering window has closed tmnt 100 cough cough

  2. By way of talking you off the ledge, that’s not what Boom Guaranteed for registered retailers means.

Boom Guaranteed means that if you’re a Registered Retailer (and meet the ongoing requirements to stay one), the title is fully returnable and therefore no risk.

Any retailer who meets the ordering requirements for the variant will receive the variant. But Registered Retailers also have the ability to get credit for unsold copies. In any given month, Boom will tag 5-8 books as Boom Guaranteed. And at the end of a future month, those retailers can provide an affidavit of destruction and get credit back from Diamond.

There are other benefits from signing up (free advertising of your store in the back of the comics for one). But the returnability is the big one.

    1. I’ve been told the guaranteed for registered retailers is the books are returnable but the way they word this one, it makes it seem as if you are not registered retailer with BOOM!, these are not guaranteed. IDK, I’m just going by how they worded it from the info relayed to me. I’m not a Diamond account holder.

From what I’ve read, the entire cover is foil so I anticipate a lot of damaged copies for these foils as well. So even if you snag a copy, there’s a good chance it’s not going to be 9.8 or better…

  3. Can someone explain to me if the bufffy foil variant is an open order after meeting the min 15 why shops are charging over cover? Is boom actually charging more?

    I’ll be looking elsewhere…

    1. I believe it’s open order after they meet the requirments. But I’m still betting a lot of shops aren’t even ordering 15 copies. I mean, I know there are some hardcore Buffy fans out there but since there’s no longer a television show, I think a lot of the potential fans have moved on.
