Variant Picks of the Week for June 24th, 2020

This week, I’m gonna start by getting the Momoko variants out of the way first. Momoko is hot, her stuff sells. But there seems to be a trend with her.

When the variant is a ratio, it does very well right off the bat in most cases. When it’s a cover priced issue, it seems to stick around cover price (depending on the title and character) or it takes a bit longer for supplies to run dry and then demand starts to make the price go up. A good example is Captain Marvel The End #1 she did, which approaches the $20 range on a good day.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Jennika #3 is a RI variant by Momoko. I’m not on the Jennika bandwagon myself but I can see those who are and those who like Peach seeking this one out and paying a premium.

The next one is Doctor Tomorrow #3 which is a regular priced cover B. Great looking cover. Not sure how many Doctor Tomorrow fans are out there but that plays a factor in how this one moves as well.

Doctor Tomorrow #3 (of 5) (Cover B - Momoko)

Plunge #4 has another awesome Gary Frank cover. I’m really digging these Gary Frank covers for this series.

Plunge #4 (of 6) (Gary Frank Variant)I don’t think I’ve ever spec’d on a MMPR book but this Inhyuk Lee is just awesome. It’s a very high ratio variant so most shops will price this one high so if you can snag for cover or dirt cheap, by all means, grab it.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #50 Virgin Variant by Inhyuk Lee.

Thor #5 Ribic Variant. Been a long time fan of Ribic since Jason Aaron turned me into a Thor fan. So yes, this is a must have ratio variant if you can nab for cheap cause rumors and confirmations are saying Thor and Black Winter become one? If true, don’t forget about Black Winters first appearance in Thor #2.

I’m not usually big on the Marvel Themed variants that come out but it’s hard to ignore this Inhyuk Lee for Immortal Hulk #34.

  1. Thor #5 will be the 1st full. Market already has decided on this variant and cvr A, judging by sales.

    1. HA…you mean FOMO ? Pumping this book as a 1st appearance is laughable.. Book JUST came out…..market or whomever hast said 1st of anything…except Thor being possessed.

      1. I’ve seen the guts and the variant is already going for at least twice ratio. I have multiples of 2, 4 and 5, so it doesn’t matter to me. There’s little chance that 6 will be the one, if that’s what you’re thinking. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

    2. Also, market just decides value. Value doesn’t dictate firsts, events or stories within the book, they just tend to coincide since the market (people + demand) love first appearances, etc.

      1. Let me rephrase. Imo, from a spec standpoint, with what we have so far, 5 will be the best one to have. Imo, people will consider this this full app.

  2. Are you guys for real? Who is picking up MMPR #50 the 1:100 for cover price—–seriously I have never seen a new book like this 1:100 sell for cover price on release day plus there might be 10-15 copies total of this book floating around. I dont think any brick and mortar store will order enough to qualify—so you are left with online sellers who are definitely not going to price it out for cover price.

    1. Ummm.. Dragons Lair in Austin, if they get them, they place all books for cover price. I’ve gotten 1 per stores, 1:100 Marvel variants for cover many times.. It just depends on if they get them or not.

I’ve heard of other stores who reward long time subscribers with high ratio variants. I’ve had a store once accidentally place high ratio variants on the shelf with the others where I snagged them for cover.

So, yes, it can happen. Does it happen often? Probably not.

    1. If you’re a fan of hers I’d just get it.
It’s $5 and will be low ordered. Pay cover now or pay a premium later.
She has her fans(I’m one of them) and they will seek it out when they learn about it.

      1. It is a pretty awesome cover—I love all of her stuff, not just her naughty books. A lot of her female figures almost have a porcelain doll look to them
