Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 1/8/14

Each week hundreds of new comics come out, each with the potential to increase in value. We pick the ones each week we think have the best shot of increasing.

The one you will probably pick up anyway:
Afterlife with Archie #3– Each issue continues to sell out. Print runs are fairly small, especially considering many Archie comics are sold on the newsstand, and this one is not. Also features a pretty sweet Francavilla Phantom Variant, Afterlife with Archie #3 Phantom Variant
The one from the big two:
All New Marvel Now Point One #1– First appearance of the All New Muslim American New Jersey resident Ms. Marvel. 10 full page story, first full appearance before Ms. Marvel #1.
The outside chance:
BAR Maid #1– Zenescope’s new series. All covers already sold out.
The Variant if you can find it cheap:
Black Widow #1 Campbell Variant– Campbell Variants have been mostly selling like hotcakes. This one is prime to shoot up, if you can find it cheap. Hot Chick, spandex suit, Campbell Cover= potential success. Needless to say it is already selling for $60-70.
The Walking Dead issue of the week:
The Walking Dead #119– Always a good pick as issues continue to shoot up in value, never know when a character will be featured on the TV show and that issue pops in price.
Let us know what you are spec-ing on this week.

  1. There was some controversy with Letter 44 #3’s cover. Do you think one of the covers may end up being more valuable/under ordered than the other?

      1. Lol my LCS shop must have put the unedited one in my pull so that they could put the other ones one the shelfs without people complaining. I suppose it is a little graphic, but “sex” and “sex criminals” is on the shelf right next to “walking dead”.

        1. One of the shops I go to has all of their recent back issues alphabetically on the shelf so it goes Sesame Street, Sex, Sex Criminals. I made mention of the appropriateness of that. They have a kids section where Sesame Street sits on the shelf too, but they have it with the regular back issues as well.
I don’t see any issue with the Letter 44 cover as it is not “graphic” and the variant really is not that different.

  2. THREAD-JACK, THREAD-JACK, THREAD-JACK!
Hi all, UKPONDSIDE here. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014 TO ALL!
I was just cruising the online comic community and then I noticed on the ‘SOLD-OUT’ thread here the following book being highlighted:
    ACCENT UK
Missing – Have You Seen The Invisible Man (One Shot), $5.00 – SOLD OUT
Then I did a quick EBAY check and noticed that there are NONE up for auction. Then I wondered ‘why’. It’s a long title, so I tried practically every version. Anyway, then I was really curious, so I started wondering about print run numbers. So, as I do, I EMAILED THE CREATOR (David West)! That’s just how I roll.
BTW @ COMICFLIPPER, are you still interested in a Q & A with Joe Mulvey of SCAM fame? I know we emailed back and forth about it a lil while ago…
Anyway, back to: Missing – Have You Seen The Invisible Man – I just got an email back from Mr. West, and he states that the print run for: Missing – Have You Seen The Invisible Man – is 850 copies! Yep, that’s right, ONLY 850 COPIES WERE PRODUCED! NO VARIANTS, OR ANY OTHER GIMMICK JUNK…JUST 850 COPIES…ALL IN!
I don’t know anything about the book, and by the look on EBAY not too many other people do either! So, I can’t say that this is a spek pick because of the quality of the content, or anything like that, but my interest was piqued by the small print run…INDEED!
Anyway, I have promised Mr. West that I would do my best to spread the word, so there…THE WORD IS SPREAD!
I’ve rounded up my UK sources, and plan to get a fair few copies of this book for cover; just seems like a ‘potential’ spek hit to me?
    Only time will tell!
Let me know if any of you are interested in this comic…Mr. West has informed me that I can also source copies directly from him. I am going to take him up on that; I’m going to ask for signed / sketched copies…hey, he asked me, I may as well take advantage of it!
    Anyway,
    Take Care!

        1. I just spoke to one of the guys I know that owns a pretty large comic shop. He said it was distributed through Diamond UK and they didn’t get it in. Looks like the hunt is on for this one for me. Looks like one of the books that if people get wind of it and start looking for it, others might start selling at a higher price.

      1. I just bought directly from the link I provided. I bought 2, kind of high priced since I’m in the U.S. so it ended up being $21 with shipping included.

      2. Yeah, the art is definitely the style I’m not big on and you have to let it sort of grow on you but the story for The Final Plague is good for sure, probably the only reason I’ve been picking them up. 🙂

  3. Yeah i checked out their website and some of their stuff looks interesting. Shame they are through Diamond UK which causes most shops to bypass them completely. Still waiting on some freebies Justin Jordan was supposed to send me.

      1. So midtown has both “missing have you seen the invisible man” and “what ever happened to the world’s fastest man”, which is the first book in the blessed/cursed series from David West.

    1. Thanks Ant…glad to be back! Well, I’ll be popping in and out for the most part. I’ll impart any relevant spek info that I run across, of course!
When I source a boat load of: Missing – have you seen the invisible man from my UK sources, I will let ALL know. I have very limited access to the APO military mailing system, but there is a chance that I can package up a bundle, and ship them to you at a decent shipping rate. Actually, it’s the same as shipping to New York from any US destination…Uncle Sam picks up the postage cost for across the Pond.
BE-WARNED HOWEVER: The APO mailing system is to be desired. They spilled cargo Airplane Fuel on a set of: The Last Of Us comics that I ordered…ruined the entire set.
Anyway, let’s see how many copies of: Missing – Have You Seen The Invisible Man I can acquire!
      Wish me luck…

    1. I just ordered one. Go to the new releases section and browse Jan 08, 2014. It’s the first one in the independents section.

    1. Well, with only 850 printed and I doubt Midtown gets a huge discount on shipping from AccentUK, they’re initial order was likely small as they were probably testing the waters on ordering it, etc.. 😉

      1. Yea Drew, I agree! I doubt very many US LCBS’s have this comic at all. And if one or two does, they probably only had a few copies each.
The more I research this comic, the more I’m leaning toward calling it: SCARCE!
There’s only one on EBAY…wink wink, but the auction owner didn’t put a description, describing the fact that this book has an extremely low print run; labeled as: SOLD OUT, and by some, it could be considered: HARD TO FIND!
Is it a COMIC HEATING UP JUST YET, probably not, but I feel now is the time to grab copies at cover…on Midtown, copies were discounted at $4.25!
        Only time will tell.
I will check with Mr. West to see if they have plans to proceed to a 2nd printing. I would doubt it, but I’ll ask the question.
Does anyone else have specific questions that I can pose to Mr. West?
@ ComicFlipper, BTW Mr. West has said that he is more than willing to participate in a Q & A on the blog…I told him that I would pass that on to the blog-owner (you)!
Hey, my motto is: INFORMATION IS KING!

      2. Well, I think some take the words “scarce” and “rare” too far nowadays. When I think of those terms, I think of something like the 1909 T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, that’s rare. If this comic had a print run of 850, it’s not scarce or rare per se, as there are 850 out there. It’s just harder to find as those who have bought it are holding onto it. But even if it does only have a print run of 850, it’s not worth squat unless there’s demand for it.

        1. Yeah I would say having a low print run does not make something rare. But I would say something people aren’t willing to sell and there are a few of would count as scarce. But yes, there must be a market and demand for it.
