A look at Wednesday 6/25/14: Outcast #1

One book jumping up in price on a Wednesday is good, but two jumping up in price on the day of release is awesome. Outcast #1 from Robert Kirkman, sold out going into Wednesday, has jumped.
Sure, there were probably 100,000 copies printed, but the demand for Outcast #1 seems very steady. Steady to the point that Outcast #1 is selling for $9.99 in buy it now (Terry Hoknes from www.hoknescomics.com has reported and has been confirmed) and copies are selling at auction for $16 currently.
A very good start for the new Kirkman book.

1. “One book jumping up in price on a Wednesday is good, but two jumping up in price on the day of release is awesome”
Whats the second book jumping in value?

2. Simply Amazing.
But not really when America alone has 300+million people.
If only 1% of america is comic book readers that is 3million fans.
Great for the industry medium of art and storytelling where ANYTHING is possible.

1. You’d have to break that down though by demographics. Age, location, sex.. it all matters and it’s likely way less than 3 million or we’d see print runs of a million or so on popular characters all the time. The last one to come close was ASM and that’s was likely because the retailers wanted all the incentive variants.

1. If you’re talking about #1, yeah, I see those at one local shop every time I go. Seems they can’t sell the last few copies they have.

1. I was talking about #2. It came out yesterday. Wondering if it will have above or below print run of number 1.
Devils Hopyard #1 2,264 copies. It’s selling above cover again on ebay maybe you should scoope those last few #1s from your LCBS. I know I would.

2. I didn’t see Devils Hopyard #2 at any of the local shops or online. I’m not gonna go scoop up any #1 either, I still have 3 copies that I couldn’t sell on the first go around when it was released. I can’t find any info on Devils Hopyard #2 either. Midtown still has #1 available.

3. Digging a little deeper, it seems Devils Hopyard #2 got pushed back with a release date of July 9th. That’s why no comic shop had any copies.

3. Outcast was actually pretty good, so my expectations were exceeded by the previews I’ve read.
I still don’t understand why people would pay premium for these on the aftermarket though. There are literally stacks of them for $2.99 at retailers and online. You can walk into any comic book store, spit in a direction and likely hit one of these comics there’s so many of them. 😉

1. Yes you can walk into any comic shop and get one. However, with only about 5000 shops across the country, some people might not be near one and order from tfaw or mycomicshop or midtown or whichever. They are showing as sold out. The alternative is eBay at a higher price.

1. I guess I should know better, most people on the internet don’t know how to use the internet. eBay is their one stop all for everything, sadly they’re just throwing money away but hey, I’m not complaining when it’s me selling. I just know how to search. It’s like the Rat Queens #2 2nd print, I didn’t settle in spending $20 for it off eBay, I found an online shop still selling it for $4. 🙂
The only problem with eBay is, to get the real value you have to go by the completed sales. Those are the ones that have actually ended and the buyer paid. Just because it’s listed at $20 doesn’t mean it’s worth that much. Now, actual live auctions where people are bidding I count as possible real value. Unless someone retracts and it drops the price, those are real demands pushing the value up with each bid. But it’s not set in stone until the whole transaction is completed.

2. Oh I know, I backed you up as well with a link to the sold listings where it was the pre-sale at more retail sane prices and then the listings of those at $9.99 and so.
I think the listing where it’s at $15 is just where someone put in their max bid and it’s just been bumped up by others. We can’t forget though, got to factor in all final sales to get a good median value of what the comic is selling for.

3. Actually come to think of it, I’d be surprised if there was over 2k direct market stores.. Austin has 4 comic shops within the city limits and there’s probably around 3 in the suburbs. I can’t see most smaller towns that aren’t around a major metropolitan area needing or having a demand for a specialized comic shop.

2. I play an MMO with a real cash based economy. I’m always reselling things for whatever % playing the spread. Sometimes my items will not be the only identical type items on auction, and of course mine are usually listed above % of the other ones. Yet there is always the times when someone will buy my lot when they could have gotten it for cheaper %.
It doesn’t make any sense at all and I can only attribute it to human nature or stupidity. Boggles my mind.

1. Nah, you’re probably good. First day hype, a few inflated prices.. the time to sell is likely over at this point. I don’t know about you but I could stop by my local shop on the way to work and still pick up a dozen of these most likely.

4. Why would someone pay $10 on eBay when they can pay UNDER cover price at midtown (which still shows in stock) or any other online comic store? That’s just lazy or ignorant. This book is not a $10 book and the price is going to collapse rather quickly, probably while I’m typing this.

1. It is just that, pure laziness probably for the most part. Can’t complain though, for us that flip comics, lazy people make us more money! 😉
Like I said earlier previously, first day hype is thinning. The time to sell is gone, you probably won’t make much off listing them now.

1. You mean in the “a”. I had no choice that was the font. Must be a graphic designer here that wants to get a logo credit for a resume or am art student or something. Might end up being a contest.

1. Hey Tony, my buddy from high school does graphic design. Let me know if you would like me to contact him for you.

1. The sad thing is my wife used to work in advertising and knows a bunch of graphic designers who are laid off and none of them want to bother. To me it says resume hole filler (graphic designer for web site that gets 100,000 monthly hits.) I could be used as a reference.

5. A TV pilot based on the comic is being written by Kirkman and will be produced through Fox International Channels for cable network Cinemax. Meanwhile, the comic will be illustrated by Paul Azaceta and published under Image Comics imprint Skybound in 2014.
Cinemax = Boobs Blood & Badwords.

6. TFAW currently is showing 37 copies of outcast #1 for anyone who missed it and likes to buy from online.

1. Funny they limited it now to 2 per customer. So most you will see is 2 in your cart.
Before they put this restriction I tested and it was showing 37 copies.
This implies a growing market and they are defending against speculators who buy multi copies.
Why did they wait a few hours to put this restriction.

7. Did anybody buy their copies at Hastings? I have a preorder coming but I saw one copy on the shelf yesterday at Hastings and bought it. When I went to pay the book scanned for $6.99 so I showed the cashier and got it corrected for cover. Just wondering what might’ve happened? I know Hastings marks up their variants but because this wasn’t a variant I wonder if the price increase was intentional or an error? Outcast was the only thing I bought so that was the only item scanned when I checked out. I’m curious if anybody else experienced this.

8. I was picking up my pull list yesterday (I know a day late!) and the guy working mentions to me I was only one of 2 people to pull Outcast in time to get it shipped this week. Others wanted it, but added it to their pull list way to late. Is it possible people didn’t know about this title??? crazy as that may seem.

1. They might of known but got distracted on it’s release date. My local shop each Wednesday is always on the phone calling people who haven’t picked up their pulls on their lists in weeks.
Also, some smaller shops don’t always keep their new releases list updated. My local shop has an online form but sometimes they’ll miss a week. Even Larry’s Comics new releases on his website hasn’t been updated since 12-04-2013… 😉
It’s only us fanatics who keep up with what’s coming out each week. I personally keep a google doc I update each week of the comics I intend to buy so I can access it on my phone in case I think I’m missing something when picking up my pulls. 🙂

2. Larry didn’t need to update anymore after his lifelong quest to get all the power rings was completed.

3. I’m telling you people missed out on this. We use comixology as our pull list system, so it’s super easy to update and edit your pull list. We are hard core, others not so much.

9. I sold 2 at 9.99 shipped and then sold 10 at best offer for 8 bucks a pop shipped, selling multiples. I only preordered for 1.94 so I am totally good, and made a bundle.

10. Midtown still has some left and you can order up to five at a time. First prints are drying up. My LCS, a large store, is almost out. They always go heavy on new releases.

1. Yeah, I stopped by my local shop today to pick up my Batman Eternal (all damaged on Wednesday so they sent them back) and they still had stacks of Outcast.
