Larry's Comics Pick of the Week for delivery date 7/2/14

Where the hell would be the fun of picking Figment #2, Deadpool vs X-Force #1, or the Image title du jour?
Too Easy.
This week there are a TON of “Right under your nose picks”
Too boring. I’m Larry Doherty, a bold maverick. It’s my job to scour previews for stuff other retailers will miss; purchase accordingly. I look under every rock.
I’ll be more daring:
My speculator-y pick of the week:
ENORMOUS #1 215 INK
(W)  Tim Daniel (A/CA) Mehdi Cheggour
In the midst of a planetary crisis for food and fuel, a vast ecological cataclysm has spawned “The Enormous,” massive beasts unlike anything ever encountered. Humanity struggles to stave off extinction. The original one-shot graphic novel returns in an ongoing series as the companion to the new live-action web series from Machinima!
Why? It HAS to have a microscopic print run. ( See how many shops have this on their shelves)
The artwork & production values are jaw dropping.
It’s the first NORMAL size appearance of the property. In 2013 Image released an oversized one shot. ( not a bad buy ) It’s my experience that collectors tend to shy away from odd size material.
This book WILL sellout at the distributor level.
This book will appeal to Giant Monster ( Godzilla fans)
Main reason for a spec play:
The book ties into a Web series that will surely bring some new faces to the direct market.

  1. You can ask for print runs on the day of a books release, but honestly nobody has any idea.
Comichron will have the numbers sold via Diamond in two months.
There is a Phantom limited to 544 copies.
    Yes 544 copies.
Most Phantom retailers would not order this obscure title.
Here are the shops that have it:
Friendly Neighborhood Comics Bellingham, MA 20
    Happy Harbor Canada
    Rubber Chicken Bellingham, MA
    Phat Collectibles CA
    Mile High Comics CO
    Chris Comics Seabrook, NH
    Forbidden Planet UK
    Larrys Comics Lowell, MA
    Jetpack Rochester NH
    Third Eye MD

    1. Do you mind me asking how many variants you were able to grab?
Do you ever send books out to CGC or do you sell raw.

  2. Glad I was able to snag a bunch first, thanks to the heads up. Hey I’ll toss my man card and say it. I truly do appreciate all you and Tony do to provide the latest and breaking in the comic book world.

  3. BOTH coves have gone to Back order at Diamond….
    Retailers calling me for copies.
The Image oversize one shot is $20+
A window of opportunity is opening.

    1. I only order through TFAW because they are literally a few miles away, And when I add to back order it adds to my already que comics without having to ship a new box.
Unfortunately they only have 1a for backorder right now But i’m watching for 1b to pop up.
Do you have some type of special website link to view backorders with diamond??

  4. No.
Diamond is a wholesaler that services retailers.
Their website is not for the general public.
    Comicsheatingup.net provides that information FREE.
    Neat huh?

    1. Well I was asking you larry because i thought you have a retailer location and have access to the inner workings. I’ve seen the guy on the computer at the LCBS and I was just curious as to how it works. I assume It’s just a site that you see inventory available which indeed is fantastic information in its own.
And yes I’m very grateful when that information shows up on this website such as through advanced reorder list.

  5. I got 1 of each regular cover, not thinking much of it. Wish I would’ve gotten more now…
    I hate when that happens!

  6. Yes, I do indeed have a 25 year old retail location in Lowell, MA and have DO access to the inner workings of Diamond & post pertinent information here.
    FREE.

    1. A 25 year old location that does huge weekend sales, you seriously need to check out his newsletter and see the deals he does on the weekend. If I wasn’t 5 states away I would have to get up there for them. Can’t justify the trip to my wife though.

  7. Congrats Larry, 25 years is something to be very proud of. Also the number of the Enormous books I snagged. I believe, not just the hype but dug number one.

  8. Currently Diamond has no copies left of any version of #1. It is definitely sold out. I have already sold 6 copies at $10 each and there is a copy on ebay so far on auction up to $11.00 I just looked through the comic and I think this might be the amazing artwork I have seen in any comic this year. It looks incredible !!!

  9. I had Enormous on my pull list to check out. Luckily I ordered both covers from Midtown and picked up a few more at the LCS today. Only one shop had the Betty and Veronica Marilyn’s variant cover (one left too), so I snagged that one as well.

  10. My shop did not even order enormous. They had copies of Figment #1 (First Print) and #2 so I picked both up.

    1. Yup, if you see any Figment’s on the shelves, grab them. My LCS has said his phone is ringing more often than usual with most of the new inquiries asking about Figment. Pick these up and hold onto them, I think they’ll only be more valuable down the road a ways when all those Disney fanatics are looking for them.. 🙂

  11. Question for all the Spec guys out there..Im sitting on a ton of books that have gone up in value like Figment.Enormous Manifest Destiny etc..my question is when do you know when its time to sell?Like i have a Strain #1 i got for $30 ..should i move it now or wait till the show airs?

    1. I would list it on the 8th, the show hits and people will be scrambling for it. If the show tanks it will still be bid up high enough to make a profit. I would keep MD for now, still life in it. I would keep one Figment, these are going to be long term valuable, but sell some to make back your money. Enormous is worth reading a copy and flipping a copy.
It is impossible to guess when the best time to sell is. I usually move in and out of books as fast as I can and take a profit and move on to other stuff. I like money coming in all the time. Sure some money is left on the table, but it is better than holding the bag if the market drops.

    2. The time to sell, the age old question. There are some variables like print run and float (number of comics in circulation from people WILLING to sell at any given time) that are not the same for any given title. A book with a print run of 100k vs a book with a print run of 25k, well the 25k could have more books out there in circ than the 100k because of people who have put a mindset in they will not sell their copy for whatever personal reason be it speculating higher or just because they are a collector/fan. This activity takes time to run its process and is called accumulation. You want a tightly accumulated low float title. This has less to do with when to sell but should affect your decision on if you want to hold long or sell now.
This being said there is also factors like hype and anticipation. Most of the time it is good to sell during the hype or anticipation phase, but this is not always true (walking dead for example that sold higher and higher after launch). We are in a supply and demand situation so as hard as it is to do you always want to be selling on the uptrend into the demand. As tony said if you have multi copies, sell some to recoup investment value. Then you can worry not risk free, on house money.
I’d hold any of your Manifest Destiny and gamble on a future media deal. Even the continued growing fan base around this title is enough to give it a slow uptrend in price similar to what you see in SAGA.
If you only have one copy of strain, Id hold it in a gamble that the show will be popular and get more than one season, then i’d look to sell it around season 2 or even 3 premier.

      1. Excellent write up Larry. I always try to sell copies on the uptrend to cover cost, and then it is house money no matter what. Even if you only sell $3.99 books for a dollar, you are still ahead of the gain. I try not to take losses, so i keep track of everything I spend. That is why I will blow out of former spec books that are still warm for $1 starts, already made money and want to unload cooling books cheap, but still making a profit. My average books sells for $12.99, the average cost to me is cover or less.
You can never peg the right time to sell, but as long as you are making money over the long haul it is worth it.

      2. Just look at the explosion of digital currencies for the perfect example of units outstanding working with the float / accumulation dynamic relationship in a supply and demand system.
That long sentence is meaning a fixed supply and more people coming in equals a boom in price as people scramble for ‘units’

  12. From Mr. Tim Daniel:
“The entire first 6 issue arc will be on time without question and every issue boasts two covers from regular series artist Mehdi Cheggour and Christian DiBari, Sarah deLaine, Michael Avon Oeming, Andrrew Huerta, and Colin Lorimer. As of this date, we are 2 interior pages from finishing issue #5 and have every intent to make sure we meet all of our deadlines without excuse. Issue #6 will be a 30 page arc-closer. Following that we’ll take a production break much like Saga. In the time between issue #6 and #7, we’ll offer the first trade paperback and a digital only Field Guide profiling characters, monsters and an original 8-page story entitled, “Colossal: Tales of Enormous”, as well as behind-the-scenes process features.
On the multi-media front, Enormous producers, Adrian Askarieh and Joshua Wexler, have been hard at work to further the live action adaptation. In addition, we’re
currently in discussion to create a high-quality, collectors focused line of action figures spotlighting Ellen Grace and a few of our favorite beasts.

  13. Heads up gang:
    According to Diamond’s list correctly.
The Enormous one shot shipped BEFORE Mondo #3 that contained the preview.
    Enormous one shot shipped 7/11/2012
    Mondo #3 shipped: 8/1/2012
Enormous one shot is the first appearance of Enormous.
Mondo is a minor key at best…
