Agent Poyo’s Picks of the Week for May 11th, 2016

Another week, another FCBD has passed.. did everyone get the free books they wanted? Did anyone score the FCBD Funko Civil War Dorbz? There might of been a new Chinese Superman appearance or maybe there wasn’t this past week in Batman Superman #32. I still think the long term spec hit will be Walking Dead #154… even Midtown sold out within a day, might be a rare issue that gets a second printing. Wither way, what a crazy week and upon us is likely another crazy week with lots of new books hitting the shelves, so let’s get on with it shall we?

DC/Vertigo Pick
Action Comics #52 (DC) Ben Oliver Variant – Nothing really stood out to me this week for DC but I must say, this is just a sweet homage cover. Some are spec’ing a death in Action Comics #52.. or was it one of the other Superman books? So many, hard to keep track and DC is usually always a let down when it comes to spec’s. They can heat up quickly but sizzle out just as fast.
Marvel Pick
Black Panther #2 (Marvel) Frank Cho Variant – Just a sweet cover. Grab it if you can, even if it’s not at cover price, grab it. These will be one of those phantom covers Mel will be talking about as people buy and tuck away into their collections for a long time coming.
Darth Vader #20 (Marvel) JT Action Figure Variant – The first cover of a character that has never had their own physical action figure. We ever see this new character Inspector Thanoth show up in a movie or show for Star Wars, expect his first appearance and this sucker to heat up.
Indie Picks of the Week (Both from Amigo surprisingly)
Alan Dracon #1 (Amigo) – “Alan is just a bodyguard trying to make a living. But this is the future, and to survive Alan Dracon must deal with high-tech industrial moguls, genetically modified organisms… and seductive corporates. And most of them want him dead. Action and adventure in the not-so-near future brought to you by Stefano Martino (George R.R. Martin’s Doorways, Doctor Who).”
Already sold out at most online retailers and you can expect a tiny print run, so find them and pick up a copy if you do find one. Could be a great story, could be a easy flip, either way you win.
Unleash #1 (Amigo) – “Soon to be a feature film! Assault survivor Emmie wants to change the world by creating her own superhero persona. Unfortunately her plans are limited, as being a hero takes more than a costume. In a strange twist of fate, Emmie forms an agreement with the most unlikely crime-fighting partner you could imagine. Now she can lay her own brand of twisted justice down on sexual predators. Or so Emmie thinks!”
Seems like it might be an interesting read. Definitely a check it out type of book.
The Spec of the Week:
The Fix #1 (Image) 2nd Print – To my knowledge, this has a new variant cover. Already sold out at a few major online retailers. The first print heated up temporarily and still has a few selling upwards of $10. This 2nd print will definitely be a smaller print run and much harder to find (since I know several shops local to me are still selling the 1st prints).. So find it, hold it, I think you’ll be able to make money from it later if this picks up with more readers and if it’s ever optioned, expect even greater things.
Honorable Mentions:
Southern Bastards is back with issue #14. I hate the gaps with this book cause I love it so much but I must give Aaron credit, each book you can almost read on it’s own and it’s still interesting, almost like a standalone story. Not many writers could do that while still trying them all together.
Guardians of the Galaxy #8 (Marvel) Arthur Adams Regular Cover – It’s a regular cover and to me, is just classic sweetness. I love these types of covers.. sort of reminds me of Superman: Man Of Steel #17, where the hero is fighting off the enemy swarm.
That’s all I got.. what you spec’ing on? What you picking up or dropping? Mention it here or in the Wednesday forum.

  1. I think I’ll take a chance on Alan Dracon b/c this will be the last time a comic will ever have my name in its title. Huzzah!

  2. No shop had The Fix #1 2nd Print in my area. Most online stores don’t seem to have listed it or they are sold out. Seek this one out.. I think it’s the one to gamble on if The Fix gains more popularity and is ever optioned, etc.

    1. My stores didn’t get it because they still have 1st prints. I did ask one shop to order it for me if they can.

      1. Hmm I have been in an all day training and haven’t made it out to the shop yet so I will see about buying a couple. Especially since this seems very hard to find.

      1. poyo, mel and I have been following this book all night and it has no where to go but up. Just labeled it a Wednesday Winner in the post.
