Agent Poyo's Picks of the Week for May 25th, 2106

It’s that time again, you know what I’m talking about, new comic book Wednesday. The past few weeks have been loaded with great new stuff along with DC pulling strings to hype their books where nothing really happens right before the Rebirth event that honestly, I have zero desire to buy and read. I’ll probably start off with Batman again and that’s it.
But anyways.. enough of my DC ranting, lets get on with the picks, DC up first.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Scooby Doo Apocalypse #1 (DC) – Forget Rebirth (you’ll find these in the bargain bin a few months from now, save your money, they’ll be over ordered), I’m going with Scooby.. there’s some really great looking Daphne and Velma covers too. The Daphne cover is done by Joelle Jones, so it’s a must pick up.
Marvel Pick
Mockingbird #3 (Marvel) – One of the overlooked most underappreciated books I think Marvel is doing. I think this one is like Spencer’s Hawkeye run, very cleverly done and another Joelle Jones cover for the regular cover. Great read, check it out if you haven’t already, this will be one of Marvel’s lower print run titles too so they’re hard to come by if they pick up.
The honorable mention for Marvel goes to the new Steve Rogers Captain America #1 by Spencer. It’s another Captain America #1 because Steve got his mojo back (if you missed it, it happened in the other Standoff tie-in in the ongoing Captain America title). Still not sure how I feel about him going with the non-circular shield though..
Image Pick
Monstress #6 (Image) – If your not reading this, well, you suck. Nuff said. Even the issues after #1 are going back for 2nd and 3rd prints, it’s that popular and good.
Indie Picks of the Week
Divinity II #2 (Valiant) – Divinity was awesome, Divinity II is just as equally awesome. Pick these up, you won’t be disappointed.
Self Storage #5 (451 Media) – Still a great read, art is spot on. Loving it. Tony dubbed it “Storage Wars Meets Walking Dead”. The last issue they dumped a kid to his zombie parents in a sotrage locker so they wouldn’t have to deal with him, so wrong but oh so right!
Spec of the Week
Hunter S. Thompsons Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas #1 (IDW) – Cult classic movie with a lot of fans. I’m just taking a chance to say this one might heat up when fans realize there’s a comic out. Might not be a fast burner but do well over time as supplies run dry and demand picks up.
That’s all I got.. until next week!

  1. What about the Fear and Loathing SDCC Ashcan that came out last year! If this catches heat, that would be the book to get.

    1. This new run could make people more aware of it for sure. Just never know…. I’m not really into the ash can type releases myself.

  2. Historically, Mockingbird has been a third rate character with few appearances. However current comic isn’t overlooked by stores with #56 rank in sales according to Diamond. Higher than Wonder Woman, Ms Marvel and Supergirl who has a TV show. Marvel seems to be outselling DC in female super heroes with unexpected hits such as Spider Gwen and Gwenpool.

    1. The problem with Spider-Gwen and Gwenpool is, people are buying them due to popularity only for the most part. Spider-Gwen story sucks (sorry, it does, it’s horrid). Gwenpool is just a cash grab and a joke of a character.
Mockingbird made my list because I think it’s a better book than it’s current sales ranking. Sure it beats out Wonder Woman and others but I don’t even go against DC when it comes to Marvel titles. Mockingbird #1 had a print run of around 42k, which in the Marvel world of books is small, at least in my opinion. Perhaps I shouldn’t have used under appreciated, because it’s more a niche read for most but I think it’s still overlooked. I think if more people gave it a go, it’s sales and print runs would increase.
One reason I think Marvel beats out DC in sales is they have superior writers for the most part. The only DC writer I really enjoy is Snyder. Good writing goes a long way and the latest Mockingbird is good stuff.
