Returning Favorites
Afterlife with Archie #9 – Huzzah, the return of one of the most fun, yet off beat and quirky books on the market.
Cry Havoc #5 – Ever seen a Norse Were-Pig? This great book deals with a ton of lycanthropes, not just the wolf kind. Imagine an army unit of “contractors” sent in to the Middle East to clean up problems and they all are shape shifters from mythology.
Divinity II #2 – Best damn Valiant book ever.
Empty Zone #8 – Hard to catagorize. What if there was a ghost in the machine, except the machine is cybernetic humans. Quirky and interesting.
Self Storage #5 – One of the freshest takes on zombies in a while. The shining star of the 451 line.
Tokyo Ghost #7 – dystopian future classic read from Rick Remender. Never know where he new issues will take you.
The Big Event
DC Universe Rebirth #1 – Never turn down 80 Pages of comics for $2.99. This is where it all starts over.
The Ones from the Big Two
Deadpool #12 – The return of Deadpool 2099. This spec darling returns and has been looked forward to.
Scooby Doo Apocalypse #1 – Going for the Velma cover because I have always like cute nerdy chicks in orange sweaters. Anyway, this book should do what Afterlife dos for Archie. Everyone knows Scooby Doo. It’s been on tv for the past 50 years (it has). A fresh new and slightly controversial take on the beloved characters.
Small Press Gem
Squarriors Vol. 2 Summer #1 – awesome look at animals after the apocalypse. Brutal book but a great read.
The Pick of the Week
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas #1 – Hunter S. Thompson in comic book form. The imagery alone will be like an acid trip. Should be a good read and could have some cross over potential with non-comic fans.

I’ve been greatly enjoying Cry Havoc. The story itself is good, but the way they adjust the panels and pacing depending on what time period we are in is ingenious.
I asked my shop to make sure they pulled the new, “Afterlife with Archie,” for me because when I asked if I was still down to get it they said the system showed I was, but that the title was inactive. Yes, it has been THAT long!
Oh yea. It has been forever. I was told by the Archie people that you “cannot rush art” true but you can turn off comic fans with long waits. The creative team is working on the Archie tv show though.
The delays on “Afterlife” and “Sabrina” have been ridiculous, and the number of times they’ve been canceled & re-solicited is now cluttered all over my DCBS order history. I still stick with them, but know a lot of people who have dropped the books due to the delays. It does make it more difficult to remember what I’ve read when the space between issues is so far apart. It helps when each is a stand-alone story, but that also doesn’t help lock-in a readership for a title, and “Afterlife” really was Archie’s break-out hit; a chance for them to reel in a larger pool of current readers.
It’s funny at how many books they have relaunched (Archie and Jughead for example) that is able to keep a regular schedule but the two horror books can’t. Their Noir line is great and holds a fairly regular schedule, Hangman is new but pretty good.
My plan is to keep buying but just wait to read when it’s all said and done (probably long after I’ve been dead for 20 years at their current rate)…
