Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 7/6/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best show at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 7/6/16:

Returning Favorites
SPREAD #14 – Still one of my favorite books when it comes out. Two covers this month.
FIX #4 – My new favorite read. Funny Copy/Criminal buddy drama. Would make a great show.
MOON KNIGHT #4 – One of two mainline Marvel books I read. This and the Punisher are where Marvel should be.
NAILBITER #23 – Another favorite. Again, would make an excellent show. Joshua Williamson at his best.
PAPER GIRLS #7 – BKV returns. I feel like the shipping schedule has gotten off track, but worth the wait.
RENATO JONES ONE PERCENT #3 – Social commentary without being preachy. Cool book. Back issues do well on the secondary market.
SUPERMAN #2 – I do not read a lot of DC books, but Superman’s son has me hooked.
New Number 1’s
THROWAWAYS #1 – Very Cool conspiracy book. Deals with MK Ultra and assets  that are used one and killed/die/disposed of.
BOUNTY #1 – Kurtis Wiebe’s new book. Being called “RAT QUEENS MEETS FIREFLY!”. Wiebe has had a track record of being optioned.
BRIK #1 – $1.99 introductory book! Love them. Will check out this cool new Oni Press book.

Drew is a bullied kid in the Yonkers neighborhood of New York City whose family faces encroaching violence from Russian gangsters. Before his beloved grandfather is killed in an attempt to muscle the family out of the neighborhood, he’s able to pass down to Drew the story of a mysterious but dangerous protector who helped their people during other troubled times. When Drew finds his grandfather kept the secret to creating a golem, is it worth the risk to summon this supernatural avenger to take on the all-too-human darkness swallowing his world? An urban fantasy tale of power and morality from writers Adam Glass (Suicide Squad, TV’s Supernatural) & Mike Benson (Deadpool, Moon Knight), amazing new illustrator Harwinder Singh, and colorist Gonzalo Duarte

Small press Gems
KIM AND KIM #1 – New female driven Black Mask book. I do like Black Mask, the combination of the two could be something down the road, as long as issue come out.
Small Press Pick of the Week
SOLARMAN #1 – Scout Comic’s new book. Re-imagined comic based on Stan Lee’s 1989 Marvel book. Rumor has it this one is being optioned.
The Pick of the Week
WALKING DEAD #156 – Did you see the spoilers? Big things happen this month. Read it and instantly called my LCS to pull me several more. This book is sold out at Diamond and you will quickly see most major on-line shops drying up. Prices already on the rise on eBay.

    1. He does the same thing with Saga, tends to take breaks that might last 2-3 months at times. I don’t blame him though, he’s still more consistent than a lot of writers out there.

      1. BKV’s breaks on Saga is to let Fiona catch up on art or at the very least have the GN sales catch up. So every 6 issues there will be a few months hiatus….not such a bad approach and definitely planned as opposed to the writers that aren’t consistant.

    2. I generally don’t mind BKV breaks because they’re “generally” planned and you know they’re coming. I hate the long hiatus between issues when it’s unexpected and you have no clue IF and WHEN new issues are coming. If a writer takes a break for the trade and says “we’ll be back in 2 months” i’m much more forgiving.

      1. Yup, everyone deserves a break. But it’s like last week when Thief of Thieves hit stands.. I think it had almost been a year since the last issue. That drives me insane.
That is one plus when it comes to Marvel/DC and the other non independent publishers, they keep their deadlines since they have larger teams to assist, help out, etc. I know being independent is awesome, I like supporting them but at least tell us when there’s a big break.. some titles do just vanish as quickly as a fart in a car with the windows down..

        1. So moral of the story comic creators….TELL US WHEN YOU’RE TAKING A BREAK!!!!!!! I really do hate when book just disappear. One of my favorite titles from 2014 “United States of Murder Inc”, I’m still waiting for the next book. Way to go Bendis….way to go. ….

  1. Fix is going back for more reprints with new cover art on the first few issues. Renato Jones #1 has an even more “damaged” cover on the #1 3rd print. Sold out at midtown.
If I had a few more bucks this I’d be picking up the fix reprints. The series feels like it could be something big in the future.

    1. I’ve been picking up all the Fix printings.. I think the 2nd, 3rd and 4th will be small and if this ever gets optioned or becomes a show (which it should), these will be hot.

      1. I could see it a villain per season.. sort of the style of American Horror or American Crime, where they keep the same cast for most part but each season is new story with new villain, all based out of Buckaroo.. 🙂

    1. I need to keep an eye out for a deal on single issues to get into this title. I couldn’t find the issues early-on with all the hype over it, and then just let it go. I recently finally read the Hack/Slash/Nailbiter one-shot, met Henderson at Heroes Con, and now I want to get into Nailbiter!

      1. Unfortunately, I have the first 2 trades and jumped on to single issues at that point. I really missed the boat on this one. It was too good to keep trade waiting. I really wish I would have jumped on from the beginning.

  2. I won’t say who, but a certain Image creator told me in confidence that *most* Image books are actually FORCED to take a 3 month hiatus every 5-6 issues. The only books that it’s not mandatory for are the top-selling Image titles, and special arrangements with certain creators. I’m sure they would print BKV books monthly, so in the case of Saga & Paper Girls it is his choice, but there are some creators out there who would actually love to have their book on the shelves every month, but Image won’t let them, because they’re not top-sellers. That was kind of an eye-opener for me. Sometimes you learn some pretty big secrets chatting with creators at conventions, if you happen to catch them at just the right time that they’re willing to share. Many of them don’t say anything until years & years later when it’s no longer an open wound. I did learn something big about a Marvel conflict behind-the-scenes, but I can’t even name the title or the people involved or you’d know who I was talking to, lol. Anyhow, I don’t mind BKV’s 3-month breaks because he at least keeps that schedule locked-down, so you know what to expect, and with 2 monthly titles in addition to other minis & small projects, I’d much rather keep Quality up than to have more books per year.
Did you see Paper Girls#6 got a 2nd Printing? I’m wondering if I will be able to find one. Books like Saga#19 were available in abundance, but others were pretty scarce…

    1. Not that you should give up your source but I’ve read that it’s strongly encouraged in past interviews with creators. So at least some of them have said it publicly before. From what i remember, Image likes to give the trade a chance to catch on to grab monthly readers and they want the creators to work ahead to ensure the books come out on a timely manner.
