Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 152nd edition of the open forum!

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

And since it is a Wednesday tradition, here are my weekly pickups.

  1. Alana says:

Preacher is amazing! DC is uber dumb for not capitalizing on the show by releasing a new Preacher comic series.

    • Cody says:

I’m super bummed the season finale already aired. But yeah dc is dumb for not rebooting the series.

    • agentpoyo says:

I thought under the Vertigo imprint, the creators (writers and artists) control more of the rights than DC. I could be wrong but Ennis first sold the rights to Electric Entertainment back in 1998 or so.. it never got far as most studios found it too controversial at the time.

I did read that in 2010, Vertigo became strictly creator owned and all DC characters that originated in the DC Universe were to return to DC, etc.

I think this is the same reason DC and Snyder in particular had to get permission from Gaiman to use his Sandman character in Dark Night: Metals… I won’t say his name to spoil for anyone who’s been living under a rock for the past month or so. 😉

    • agentpoyo says:

Yeah, just like Y: The Last Man, it’s creator owned by BKV. So if DC were to reboot Preacher, it would likely have to be Ennis to sign off on it or just do it himself. I’m pretty sure he’s done telling the story though, some writers know when it’s over.. gotta give them some respect for doing such things.

Just like I was sad when Breaking Bad ended but I know why it did, if it went on for too long, it would start to repeat and the story would start to lose it’s edge I think.

  2. A. King says:

Over the weekend I found a copy of THA #22 for $15, I missed every other issue but that’s the only one I really need anyway.

  3. David Bitterbaum says:

My possible interests this week are:

Amerikarate #6–It’s a silly and fun read.

Babyteeth #4–I need to grab a copy of issue #3 so I’m ready for #4!

Dark Nights: Metal #2–I’ll flip through this but may leave it on the shelf.

Mister Miracle #2–I enjoyed the first issue and am curious where this goes.

Realm #1–Hot Image book of the week!

Rose #6 Cover B–I love David Finch’s artwork.

Runaways #1–Maybe this latest re-launch will work?

Slasher #4–The book I’m most excited for this Wednesday!

    Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #24–Always entertains.

  4. Michael Cox says:

Hey guys just to let you know Midtown Comics did replace my 4 damaged Totally Awesome Hulk #22’s with very nice copy’s.Got them on Saturday. Thanks for advice and i guess Midtown is also totally awesome in my book.

    • Anthony says:

Wow. That is awesome. They will still sell the damaged copies though.

      • agentpoyo says:

Yes they will…. And still make nice profit. Those VF books will get a slight markup on the $15-$20 hot book…. They cluld likely sell them for $10 each and they’ll sell.

    • agentpoyo says:

Very nice. Perhaps they’re starting to hold back a few issues to replace damaged books.

    • Alana says:

They don’t always get my business but they do at least once a month. They are the gold standard for what online comic retailers should be and what I compare other online comic purchases to.

    • Yes similar thing happened with my order over a week ago. Box arrived all bent out of shape due to the shipping process, they said they’d exchange most of the comics, except Darkseid #1 which had sold out since..I sent that back as well bc it’s still bent and not worth having in my opinion.

  5. Alana says:

I actually bought new books this week!
Have everything venomized and lenticular covered in preordered sets. So Action Comics #987 is covered as well as venomized Weapon H and Green Goblin. I also bought the regular covers of Weapon X #8 and ASM #32 because they are awesome. Really hate the white corner on the Weapon X covers, keep ruining beautiful covers week after week.
    All new wolverine #24
    Teen Titans #12 x3
    Flash #30 cover a
    Supergirl x3
Gwenpool #20 1st evil Gwenpoole? 1st Gwenpoole in 616? Could be interesting.

  6. Michael Cox says:

Grab copy’s of The Realm #1 .I’m thinking it’s going to be big!

  7. PETER CLIMIE says:

Great to see a comic set in Glasgow Scotland on the shelves. (Where I live)
So picked up both covers of Sink #1
Spy Seal #2 – my son and I loved reading #1 together. Quirky fun.
Red Dog #6 final issue – enjoyed this

    Briggs Land #4
    Divided states of Hysteria #4
    Retcon #1
    Amazing Spider-man #32
    Mr Miracle #2

  9. Lonzilla says:

    My pickup of the week:
I was working one of the merch tables at the GBH show Friday night, brought a Walking Dead blank with me and got Colin, the singer, to doddle a quick skull on it for me. He’s not an artists, but what the hell right?
Danzig was playing at the same time on the same block so after we all left the club at 2:30AM, we walked around the corner to where the Danzig tour bus was,
Long story short, Glenn drew me a pic on the back of the blank.
I may slab it even though it will get a green label, or just fold it open to frame it to display both sides. Havent decided yet

    • Brennan says:

      slab it
i doubt that danzig has done too many sketch covers and has a huuuuuuge following! (as he should!)

  10. So much stuff to consider this week, but tried to stay light and focused lol

    All New Wolverine 24A
    Wolfenstein #1
    Realm #1
    Rocky & Bullwinkle #1A
    Teen Titans #12A x 2
    Walking Dead 171

Who am I kidding though I know I’ll order more with today’s new issues too!

  11. Mark McAlister says:

I keep saying I’m gonna cut back, and I try to stay around $30.00/Week on comics…but not this week!

    Flash #30
Venomverse #2 – Torque Variant, I love her work
DC Metal #2…not sure I understand what the hell is going on, but its awesome
    Mister Miracle #2
    Babyteeth #4
    Secret Empire Oomega
    X-Men Blue
    Curse Words #8
    AND Because CHU Said So:
    Tenn Titans #12
All New Wolverine #24 – Yu Cover
    Supergirl #13 Artgerm Cover
The Realm #1 (could only find cover A)

Thats as big of a week as I’ve ever had…..maybe NEXT week I’ll cut back

    Thanks CHU!

  12. agentpoyo says:

I was able to snag a Kingsman Retailer Appreciation cover at cover price today. It’s my score of the day. It was just sitting there, in front of the pile of all the others from last week.

  13. Lonzilla says:

The 1st 2 shops I hit up only got a couple copies of Realm #1. Supply probably won’t be too plentiful out there

  14. Eric R says:

After a number of smaller weeks, I can’t believe how many books I got today!
    Kill of Be Killed
    Grass Kings
Sacred Creatures (this story is starting to reel me in)
Secret Empire (Turner color variant-Hurray, I’m done with this putting together the 1:50 variant set, beautiful artwork, but I’m glad to be save that money for something else)
Weapon X #8 (Venomized variant X2 for cover price)
    Realm #1 (Moore variant X2)
    Doctor Aphra
Star Wars (Leia action figure variant)
    Briggs Land #4
    Wonder Woman #30 (Frison variant)
    Mister Miracle #1 2nd print
    Mister Miracle #2
Supergirl #13 (Artgerm variant X2, purchased online, no stores in my area had any?)
    Babyteeth #4

As I look over this list, I just haven’t realized how many books I’m currently reading and enjoying on a monthly basis. Out of all these books only the Weapon X and Supergirl are spec books. The rest are books that I’m either reading on a regular basis or picking up because I want to give it a try (Realm).

As someone that has been collecting for over 30 years, this has got to be the most options and subject matter that I’ve ever seen. When I started at the tender age of 13, you had Marvel and DC and other than Star Wars, Shogun Warriors, et al, everything was superhero based. I know that people are always predicting the death of physical comics, but I feel good about the hobby and what is available today. Thoughts?

    Good hunting everyone.

  15. schweizerdavid says:

I went to Rose City Comic Con this weekend.

Picked up three Rick & Morty books from the Oni table: Pocket It Like You Stole It #1 Nintendo Gen Con Variant, #25 Con Blank Variant, and #16 Last of Us Variant.

Hit the jackpot with Skottie Young. To have the honor of purchasing a commissioned sketch, you have to roll doubles on a pair of dice, meaning about a 16% chance to piss off all the people in line behind you. I rolled double fives and commissioned Plastic Man. Skottie said he had never sketched Plas before and that he had fun doing so. Let’s home for a Skottie Young Plas book in the future.

I get a lot of books signed at RCCC. This year, I got books signed by: Dave Gibbons, Mike Zeck, Chip Zadarsky, Matt Fraction, Emma Rios, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Riley Rossmo, Erica Henderson, Jim Mahfood, David Peterson, and Kyle Straham. Saw Brandon Graham and got my second set of October Yen signed and sketched as well as my first print of Multiple Warheads. Matt and Chip supplied word balloons for each other on my Sex Criminals #1 4th print cover. Missed out on Ben Templesmith and both James O’Barr and Rob Liefeld cancelled. I get a lot of signatures without a witness and pay for it on the back end if I end up slabbing them at a later date, especially for books with multiple signatures. CBCS charges $25 to verify the first signature and $15 for each additional.

Picked up some 2/$1 books: AH! Vampi, Poison Elves hard to find later issues (I temporarily stopped collecting comics around issue 25), Sam Kieth’s Aliens Earth Wars, & a full set of Charlie Wise’s Blue Moon. I’m a fan of early 90’s indy books and Blue Moon fits the bill. Love triangle like Strangers in Paradise as filtered through a 60’s underground comic with modern sensibilities and foibles. Kind of like a grown up Archie. Found out about it when the characters were in a XXXenophile spinoff called Utopia. Charlie now draws a webcomic.

I dropped off 11 books with CBCS: a possible 9.8 NYX 3, What If Venom signed by Skottie Young, two copies of Rick & Morty 1 (reg and 1:30) both signed by Dan Harmon earlier, two Swamp Thing 9 both signed by Bernie (going to sell one to pay for the other if anyone is interested), a Marvel Super-Heroes Winter Special, and a Caliber Presents 1. Some of you will cry, but I broke open my 1973 3-pack DC A-3 Super Pac to slab the Wonder Woman 205, the Phantom Stranger 24, and the Brave and the Bold 106 inside. I decided to use the CBCS approved pressing so I’m not expecting any books back until March. I’ll let you know how I fared.

Met my hero, Weird Al, and got a signed picture of us.

I went all three days this year. I usually just go on Sunday. It has gotten so large that it took me all three days to walk the floor and see some but not all of the panels I wanted to see. The longest comic signing lines were for Chip Zadarsky and Skottie Young. I was sad to see absolutely no line for Dave Gibbons or Mike Zeck, but it gave me a chance to talk to them. There was a large area set up by the Portland Retro Gaming Expo of free-play pinball tables, arcade games, and home sets. There was a smaller area set up like a 70’s den complete with lime green couches, large TV sets, and Ataris. To me, the best panel of the weekend was the one for Sex Criminals.

In the mail: Lady Death Merciless Onslaught 1 Shannon Maer signed by Pulido (thanks Mel V).

    Picking up this week:
    Supergirl 13
    Invader Zim 23
Realm 1 (I skipped out of picking up the RCCC exclusive variant on this one. I may kick myself, but had just laid down a lot of money for the slabbing and the Skottie Young sketch)
Rose 6 Finch if I can find one

  16. Brennan says:

    Hello again!
Busy week for me as my wedding is on Sat.! (Don’t worry, I’m ready!) This is my last work day of this week as I took off the next two days to prepare.
I will have juuuuust enough time this evening to swing past my LCS and pick up my books this week, but not likely to get to read them for a few days.

    They are:
    Action Comics 987 – Lenticular
    Birthright 26
Dark Nights Metal 2 – regular cover
    Deadpool 36
    Detective Comics 964
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps 28
    Mister Miracle 2
    Secret Empire Omega 1
    Star Wars 36
    Doctor Aphra 12
    Supergirl 13 – Artgerm
    Amazing Spider-Man 32
    Flash 30
    Uncanny Avengers 27
    Venomverse 2
    Baby Teeth 4
    Pestilence 4

    Wish me luck y’all!

    • agentpoyo says:

No, you’re not ready. No matter what everyone tells you or if you think you’re ready, you’re not ready. You have been warned! And if you’re talking about kids, think twice about that as well.. get out now while you still can or you’ll become a prisoner forever.. FOREVER I SAY! 😉

      • schweizerdavid says:

What Poyo said. I keep joking that as soon as my kid leaves home, I’m putting in a pinball table.

    • Anthony says:

      Congrats Man!
and good luck, you will need it.

  17. Ken M. says:

I said last week that I needed to give my wallet a break. This was not that week, though. Pull list wasn’t done until I walked into the store, so I missed out on Realm #1 A & B, Teen Titans #12, Supergirl #13 B cover, and Deadpool #36 which were sold out.

    Teeing them up:
ACTION COMICS #987 (OZ EFFECT) $2.99
DARK NIGHTS METAL #2 (OF 6) ROMITA VAR ED – missed out on either the Romita or Lee cover, can’t remember which one.
FLASH #30 VAR ED – I think I got this one, at least.
MISTER MIRACLE #2 (OF 12) VAR ED – no A cover, sold out I assume
WONDER WOMAN #30 – no B cover, damaged in shipment
SHEENA #1 CVR A CAMPBELL – yes, I did pay cover price, actually 25% off as is the case for all these books. One left on the table, but I decided to leave it.
    RETCON #1
ROSE #6 CVR B FINCH – still 1 or 2 left on the table, might pick those up in a few days if they are still there.
    SPY SEAL #2
STAR WARS #36 – had the 40th anniversary cover, may pick it up if it is still there later
    VENOMVERSE #2 (OF 5)
X-MEN BLUE #11 Cover A & Parallel Lines Homage Cover
    Dread Gods #2

I might take a look at a couple other stores for Realm and others that I missed, but the vultures have probably already picked the bones, so to speak.

  18. Anthony says:
