DC's Damage #1 Cover By Tony Daniel Features Interesting Gimmick

I am honestly not sure if this has been done before, but Damage #1 from DC comics, out 12/20/17, has a pretty novel gimmick cover. Not foil, not hologram, not lasers, but something more simple.

The cover by Tony Daniel has a vertical gatefold cover. Most gatefold covers are horizontal, folding out from left and right to extend the cover image. Damage #1 will fold out up and down to make a more poster type cover.

Tasked as the government’s own living, breathing, ticking time bomb, Ethan retains no control when the monster takes over. Cheaper than a nuclear warhead and twice as effective, Ethan fights to rein in the damage he unleashes when the beast inside him springs free for one hour a day. With everyone around him in danger, Ethan struggles to contain the DAMAGE he inflicts on the DC Universe.

  1. Marvel did something like it years ago withe the 1st issue of Force Works, an Avengers spinoff. It was a little more complicated, designed as a “popup” type cover that made a poster size image.
The character looks like a cross between King Kong & Godzilla! I will say, these Metal books look like the most interesting things DC has done in many years.

    1. I got a bit of a Hulk vibe too! Especially that brief time Bruce Banner worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. with the agreement he would go smash stuff for them as the Hulk if they let him do all his fancy research when human.

  2. Someone let Marvel know that diluting Superman’s powers to create individual mutants is not fooling anyone..well almost.
