Poyo’s Spec and Drek for July 25th, 2018

As you all know, AgentPoyo is the alter ego of Anthony. That’s probably why you all like me more right? I kid, I kid. You can ask Mel or Blind Adam that I’m real cause they’ve met me if any of you had any doubts.

As I’ll be missing this weeks comic book Wednesday (I’m not complaining, I’d miss it every week if I could just stay on a permanent vacation), that’s not going to stop me from making a few picks and possibly a drek pick, you all likely know which one that’s going to be if you read my Likes and Dislikes yesterday.

DC/Vertigo Pick

Forget Teen Titans #20, my pick this week goes to the Regular Cover A for Wonder Woman #51.

It’s no longer Killer B covers, it’s Amazing A’s.

Artgerm brings us a great looking cover A this week. Pick it up for the artwork to tuck away in your Artgerm section of your long box, cause we all know you have one.

But seriously, grab a copy of Teen Titans #20. This new Crush character could take off but I still have that feeling she’s being pushed too much by DC. So it’s an artificial demand if you ask me. You can still find plenty of copies at Midtown. It’s been a week and they still have the variants available so unless no one is ordering them, might be a sign that a lot of shops went really really heavy on them. Buy 1 or 2, but don’t buy any more. If these do become gold one day, it’s going to be a long time from now is what I’m predicting.

Maybe in 20 years she’ll surpass her dad’s first appearance price of what…  $50?

Marvel Pick

Grab a copy of Venom. Grab a copy of Amazing Spider-Man but my pick this week is Doctor Aphra #22 with an amazing Ashley Witter cover.

I’m going to be paying more attention to Witter’s covers from now on. If she keeps pumping out these types of covers, we’ll likely see her start to expand more into the Marvel Universe titles I hope.

A close second is Deadpool Assassin #4 variant cover by Patrick Brown.

Love this cover.

Just a really neat cover. I love gray tones too so I’m just a sucker for it. I don’t expect much heat on this one or Doctor Aphra, they’re picks mostly for the great cover arts.

So don’t go picking on me in a year Shawn B. These are not spec books, they’re just “I Love Artwork” books.

Indie Pick
Hellicious #1
I’ve been waiting for this book out from Mina Elwell (Infernoct).

It just sounds fun, so who couldn’t pass this one up. Expect small print runs for sure. I’m sure most shops didn’t even order them. It might heat up but it may not as I’d imagine it’s for a certain audience.

Read the description, it describes it best:

Cherry, the Devil’s prankster granddaughter and the cutest grim reaper in Hell, is honestly just trying to have fun and make new friends. She just keeps getting derailed by the fact that human beings are flammable. She loves everything about Hell – its burning landscapes, its horrific inhabitants, and especially her demonic mother and grandfather – but she’s lonely. There’s nobody to play with, and anyone who tries ends up defenestrated, digested, or otherwise destroyed. There’s only one mortal who Cherry thinks might survive her friendship: rock star and goth icon Briggy Bundy. The bad news is, he isn’t dead…Yet. It’s Kim Reaper meets Calvin and Hobbes meets Dante’s Inferno!

Small Publisher Pick

I’m pleased to announce Cullen Bunn’s 1 Billionth working title! Bone Parish

Yes, Bunn puts out of a lot of books. I’m pretty sure he’s just a robot that writes.

This week we get a new book from Cullen Bunn, out from BOOM!.

Bone Parish #1 description:

A new drug is sweeping through the streets of New Orleans, one made from the ashes of the dead. Wars are being fought over who will control the supply, while the demand only rises. While the crime families wage war, users begin to experience terrifying visions of the dead coming back to life-through them.

Sounds great. I’m still worried though about all the titles Cullen Bunn is actively working on. He has so many I can’t even name them from memory. I just hope most of these are already completed works so he’s not distracted or the result is a bunch of unfinished stories. Nothing worse than starting a new title and we never get to an ending.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

You likely already know this one but this weeks drek pick goes to Mr. & Mrs. X #1. Do I need to explain? I like Kelly Thompson’s writing and I’m sure the artwork will be great but I just don’t see this lasting long.

This just reminds me of that Brangelina movie for some reason. Married couple as spies except this one is married mutants saving the world instead of killing one another. But give it time, the love will quickly fall apart for this book.

  1. I think Crush will be here to stay. Her dad is lame, I’ve never liked him. She has a Damian Wayne and Harley Quinn kick ass punk rock look to her. I dig her look, and Jimenez is awesome. Midtown has them available for $42.50 which is what they are going for on ebay. I don’t think there’s as many out there as you think. We shall see. No Natali Sanders Barbarella variant? Natali Sanders and Ashley Witter are awesome Women are taking over comics!!!

    1. We’ll certainly find out in a few months. But with DC sending out a reminder email to Diamond account holders for FOC….. I just have this feeling it’s going huge compared to a normal demand print run.

    2. Could be right..seems like another good female cosplay character too..funny how Midtown has limited order son the Infinity book #1 but is allowing customers to order as many TT 20 as they like

      1. Either they loaded up on Teen Titans or no one is buying loads of copies cause the spec is dead since DC gave shops a heads up…. So could be combination of both. Too many bought and now too few being bought.
