Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 8/29/18

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 8/29/18:

Returning Favorites
Blackwood #4 – If you are not reading this Evan Dorkin written series about a school for the supernatural, you are missing out. Crazy old lady with killer bugs, a Siamese-twin chimp (sorry I know conjoined simian is the politically correct term), and more craziness. It is just awesome.

A Walk Through Hell #4 – Hell is a warehouse that will lead even the toughest SWAT member kill themselves over. A mind twisting horror from Garth Ennis. With it being optioned, these early issues will be key.

For The Conspiracy Theorists
Not going to lie, I love a good conspiracy theory. As a result I have two books on the list this week.
House Amok #1 – Ten-year-old fraternal twin Dylan Sandifer and her family have fallen down a rabbit hole full of secret implants, conspiracy theories, Mandela effects, extradimensional invaders, and organ thieves. As the attacks against them intensify, the Sandifers light out on a cross-country search for answers and salvation, blazing a bloody path of torture, arson and murder. Can young Dylan save her family from these delusions… or is this ornate conspiracy actually true? ‘The Sandifers are experiencing a mental condition known as folie a deux, a shared madness that will drive them to kidnap and torture strangers, burn down secret safe houses, and do whatever it takes to stay alive.

Beyonders #1 – This looks awesome and could be the surprise hit of the week. A young boy obsessed with crop circles and cryptography finds his boring life turned upside-down when he discovers that all of his conspiracy theories are true, sending him on the ultimate treasure hunt for an ancient secret spanning thousands of years. What is the connection between a lost mountaineer, an indecipherable manuscript, and the lost library of Alexandria? How is this connected to a one-eyed, flatulent Welsh Corgi and endless plates of corned beef sandwiches?

For the Love of Comics
Fantastic Four #1 Facsimile Edition – I love when the reprint classic comics with the ads and all. This one reprints the first appearance of Marvel’s First Family.

The Gamble
Joker Daffy Special #1 Sanford Greene Cover – Two of the craziest characters the WB owns cross over for mayhem. The B cover is sold out online and starting to see a little action on eBay, still selling above pre-order prices but not going to put your kids through college. Going to be fun though.

The Small Press Pick of the Week
Rick and Morty Vs. Dungeons and Dragons #1 – Sure, there will be a ton of copies since there are a bunch of store variants, but this is just plain fun. Crossing over two completely unrelated things into a mash up of craziness. Do not forget the contest to give away a copy of the Gencon preview we have running.

The Big Two Picks of the Week
Venom First Host #1 – While this is not written by Donny Cates, Donny Cates laid out the framework for this story to happen. Venom Space Knight #12 is already seeing increased prices as it previously mentions Venom’s first host (thanks to Mel V. for mentioning that one to me.)

Web Of Venom VeNam #1 – Telling the back story of Rex Strickland, the former SHIELD operative who we discovered is now just a symbiote posing as him, well, until Venom absorbed him.

That is it for this week, let us know what you are speccing on. And in case you missed it, here is this week’s New Comic Spec Review Video:
