Poyo’s Spec and Drek for June 12th, 2019

It’s new comic book day. We spec, we drek and we spend our hard earned cash on geek books, whether you read, collect or flip.

This week is exciting, particularly because a new Silver Surfer book hits store shelves and I’ve been longing for a good Silver Surfer series (since Dan Sott’s last volume was terrible, at least for me).

DC/Vertigo Picks

Not a whole lot going on for me in DC this week. There’s an awesome Artgerm variant for Catwoman #12 (Lau Variant) but this one won’t heat up, it’s just a book for the personal collection.

The pick this week goes to Batman Who Laughs #6 (of 6) (Frison Variant). The print run will be huge and this one won’t be hard to find but it’s still a really sweet cover.

Frison has fans and a following now. So it’s a must pickup for any BWL fan and Frison fan.

Marvel Picks

No brainer pick, despite the possible huge print run. This weeks pick goes to Silver Surfer Black #1 by Donny Cates and Tradd Moore.

Midtown and a few other online sites have listed the limited Comicspro variant for just a big over cover price and we’ve seen a few sold already on the secondary market at $40. So not a bad pickup if you find them or order online. Plus it’s a Adi Granov cover.

The next pick is Venom #15. A great looking Kyle Hotz cover with Cullen Bunn writing.

The last book that seems to just require a mention even if it doesn’t heat up is Immortal Hulk #19. Great series due to story and writing. I’m sure the 2nd print is already on the way. Buy to read and keep a watchful eye on this one as anything could cause these to heat up.

Indie Picks

I mentioned this a few months back as an Indie book to check out and watch out for. Now comes the time it hits store shelves.

This weeks pick is Banjax #1. A superhero is dying and before he goes, he attempts to rid the city of all super villains before he goes. The solicitation alone wins me over. I just hope the actual book is good with decent artwork.

Small Publisher Picks

The small publisher pick was easy this week. Amber Blake #4 Nodet Variant.

These 1:10 incentive variants have been easy flips for those who can score them for cover price or cheap. Some reaching the $100+ range.

But you have to flip them quick to get maximum profit as these seem to fizzle quickly.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Does DC not want to sell books? Why would they tap Connor to do Supergirl #31 as their variant B cover? This cover is just horrid to look at.

What happened to DC being the king of Killer B variants?

This is not the direction they should be going and Connor needs to stop doing covers and particularly women heroes. I might be the only one but for some reason she cannot draw women’s faces, they all turn out to be masculine looking. Stick with cover A if you’re buying Supergirl currently.

    1. I think it’s pretty clear that DC is trying to include the YA crowd with these covers…..no need for the hate.

      1. Im not hating, or referring to that cover alone. It is my opinion that Connors work doesnt suit the super hero genre. Thats not a knock against her. She is a fine artist. Her style, imo, doesn’t work well for Super hero books. It has an ‘Archie digest’ feel to it, for me.

  1. Not a fan of her style AP, but stepping back and looking at it with fresh eyes I see Saturday morning cartoon characters. Anyone else think animation might be a better route?
