Poyo’s Spec and Drek for November 6th, 2019

Welcome once again to my spec and my drek and Happy Halloween Eve.. if there is such a thing. I pick what I think will be winners, not only if you make money by flipping but winners as in either a great read or just awesome art.

Then there’s the pesky drek, the comic you should avoid altogether or not fall into the buying every variant trap.

DC Pick

It’s still selling for upwards of $30 on a good day but Midtown has these listed at 1 per customer and $17, or if you prefer TFAW, they got theirs at $19.99.

So if you want to take a chance in flipping for a few bucks, go for it but if you’re just a Joker fan and want this for the personal collection while not paying full secondary market prices, then throw it in with your Midtown or TFAW orders.

Marvel Pick

Holy Snap, Poyo has another variant as a pick this week? That’s right, my first pick in the Marvel category is another ratio’d type variant which I pointed out when it was on FOC.

That pick goes to Ghost Rider #2 and the Clayton Crain 1:10 Variant.

I’m not expecting this to heat up but it’s just a cover any Ghost Rider fan should pick up for the personal collection.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

I got a chance to read this new book from Scout at NYCC.

Wretches #1

Alone on the tough streets of an alien city, far from the lifeless planet they once called home, siblings Shea and Sean spent their youth struggling to survive. Still suffering emotionally from the loss of everything they’d ever known and loved, Shea and Sean have nothing else in the universe but each other.

Forever outrunning the horrors of their past, they survive the only way they know how- by hunting and killing sentient robots for profit! Now, when the rough path that they had no chance to follow finally catches up to them, will they be able to keep each other safe or will they lose the only important thing they have left, each other?

Likely a renewed push for the upcoming HBO Max series that’s planned, I just dig this Jae Lee cover. I don’t expect any heat on this new series, it’s more for the existing fans. If and when the series hits the screen, will be interesting to see what the earlier issues of Niobe do on the secondary market.

Niobe She Is Death #1 (Cover B – Lee)

With a world divided, who do you turn to?

In the sequel to Niobe: She is Life, a bounty has been put on the young savior’s head.

When bad men come to collect, innocent girls are caught in the crossfire, and Niobe must go on the offensive.

My last pick goes to the new sci-fi series out from Vault Comics. If the art is good and the story is top notch, could be an entertaining read.

Heist How to Steal a Planet #1 Cover A

Welcome to planet Heist! It’s the cutthroat capital of the entire Nehring System, home to billions of the worst men and women in the galaxy.

The Pan-Galactic government has no idea what to do with the planet, but conman Glane Breld and his band of thieves know exactly what to do with Heist-they’re going to steal it.

It’s Ocean’s Eleven in space, brought to you by writer Paul Tobin (Colder and Bandette) and Arjuna Susini (The Replacer)-the only minds crazy enough to steal an entire world.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

When did Amazing Spider-Man turn into Sports Illustrated Swimsuit?

Apparently Midtown Comics is trying to sell off this ComicXposure Variant that’s just ridiculous if you ask me. Yeah I know, sex sells but this cover isn’t even that good. Mayhew can do better than this and he should stick to the more action covers that are actually relevant to the story. But then again, I guess we can’t blame Mayhew for the cover on this book, ComicXposure I’m sure just picked something from his existing backstock of drawings.

Save your $25..  if you really want to just throw $25 away, I’ll give you my paypal account info.

  1. “…and Happy Halloween Eve.. if there is such a thing.”

    Copy paste fail.

Crain was born to draw Ghost Rider! Loved just about every cover he’s done for GR…I like most of his covers anyway.

Midtown still had GR2 1:10 for under ratio. I should grab one….
