Poyo’s Spec & Picks for January 19th, 2022

Welcome to this weeks spec. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover.

It’s another big week.. particularly coming out of Marvel.

Marvel Picks

Ben Reilly Spider-Man #1 gives us a Skroce regular cover. This title might be good, I’m going into it with zero expectations but I’m likely to pick up a copy just because I like Skroce. The best cover variant is the Maleev Variant though.

Ben Reilly Spider-Man #1 (Jurgens Design Variant)
Ben Reilly Spider-Man #1 (of 5) (Jurgens Variant)

Ben Reilly Spider-Man #1

Probably worth picking up at least one copy goes to Hulk #3.

Hulk #3 (Nakayama Classic Homage Variant)
Hulk #3 (Cheung Headshot Sketch Variant)

Hulk #3

Miles Morales Spider-Man #34 (Acuna Variant) is just pure awesomeness for a variant B cover.

Moon Knight #7 and that Rahzzah variant are musts for me. The Rahzzah already getting listed at $20 to $25 on some eBay pre-sales.

Moon Knight #7

Some honorable mentions but I’m not anticipating any heat from these, maybe good reads:

She-Hulk #1 – So many covers and variants.
Silk #1 – How many reboots are we going to get of this title? Geez…
Silver Surfer Rebirth #1 (of 5) but the Maleev Variant could be a nice flip if you can snag at a lower price.

Strange Academy #15 is already selling for $20 and up already. So it’s a definite grab if you plan to flip.

The Star Wars Books to pick up:

Star Wars High Republic #13
Star Wars High Republic #13 (Anindito Variant)
Star Wars Doctor Aphra #18
Star Wars Doctor Aphra #18 (Tarr Variant)
Star Wars Doctor Aphra #18 (Sprouse Lucasfilm 50th Variant)

DC Picks

Batman the Knight #1 (of 10) (Cover A – Carmine Di Giandomenico) is a must for me. I like Chip Z’s writing so this is likely gonna be for a great read.

Batman the Knight #1 (of 10) (Cover A - Carmine Di Giandomenico)

Catwoman #39 Sozomaika if you can get for cheap is going to be a nice flip when looking at the current eBay prices.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Apache Delivery Service #1 gets a second printing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #125 (Cover A – Sophie Campbell) is a must for any TMNT fan. Might be a good pick up if you don’t normally pick up TMNT for the long term potential.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #125 (Cover B – Eastman)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #125 (Cover A - Sophie Campbell)

Bolero #1 (of 5) (Cover A – Vecchio) is a new sci-fi title out from Image. I’ve been intending to review this but have yet to read it. Hoping for a good read at minimum.

Bolero #1 (of 5) (Cover A - Vecchio)

The first issue did well on the secondary market but Animal Castle #2 (Cover A – Delep Silvio the Bull) is out this week. I don’t expect issue #2 to take off but if retailers didn’t order enough (like Nottingham), could see some love. Still available though at most retailers so I’m going to assume most weren’t caught off guard.

Animal Castle #2 (Cover B – Delep Azelar the Rat)

  1. That Rahzzah variant is a future classic, and with no incentive variant out for this issue It should be even bigger. So happy I preordered a bunch. I think this also has a 1st app of ‘Doctor Moon’? Really like the Hulk 1:25 and is in keeping with the bombastic nature of the series. Marvel stepping up their game with cool Miles variants atm, perhaps in an effort to sway the broad opinion that the new costume isn’t great – I for one am a fan.
