New Mutants Movie Spec And Keys

I know the New Mutants movie announcement was made a while ago and I’m sure the speculation around it has been discussed but I caught a blurb online the other day that got me thinking about it again.
So after seeing the post with possible concept art for X-Force, I decided to scour Wikipedia for a couple hours and come up with a list of New Mutants first appearances that may help people make some spec choices leading up to the film.
The obvious key book is Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (New Mutants) which has long since jumped way up in value (and price), but there are plenty of other books with potential spec value down the line.
Since there have been so many New Mutants members and affiliated characters over the years, its impossible to predict who exactly will be featured in the movie. The simplest guess would be that the movie will star the original team–Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Karma, Mirage, and Sunspot–all of whom, except for Karma, first appeared in MGN#4 .
My spec picks are Marvel Team Up #100 (1st Karma), New Mutants #99 (1st Shatterstar & Feral), and X-Factor #17 (1st Rictor). Karma is a member of the original team and MTU #100 is still super cheap.
As for Rictor and/or Shatterstar, I think there’s a good chance they will be in the film because of the increasing focus on diversity in comics. An openly gay character featuring prominently in a Marvel movie is just a matter of time. Because of this, X-Factor #45 (Vol. 2), which is the 1st kiss between these same-sex lovebirds, could also potentially increase in value.
Below is a list of New Mutants characters’ first appearances. There are a ton, yes, which means that only a very small percentage of them will end up being worth anything. But most of the issues are still in dollar-bins, so the investment risk of gathering them up is currently very low.
I’m sure there are plenty of books that I’ve missed that are potentially significant so I assume y’all will make them known in the comments.

  1. Is NM 99 the first appearance of Shatterstar or is it NM Annual 6? I looked on a few CGC labels of 99 and it only mentions 1st appearance of Feral. Some sources say 99 is his first appearance and some do not. I haven’t been able to find a CGC copy of Annual 6.

    1. seems up in the air, at least according to cgc and cbcs.
cgc label says nm annual 6 is 1st shatterstar but doesn’t mention him at all on nm 99.
cbcs says nm 99 is 1st shatterstar cameo, haven’t seen their label for annual 6.

    2. Shatterstar appears in the X-Force 2-page pin-up in New Mutants Annual 6 (June, 1990) and then a cameo in New Mutants 99 (March, 1991), and then full appearance and joins in New Mutants 100 (April 1991).

  2. I think you may be over looking fan-favorite Magik 1st appearance (with that name) NM 14, and Shatterstar’s 1st cameo appearance in NM Annual 6. Otherwise nice list.

  3. New Mutants Annual#6 has a “cameo” of Shatterstar in a pin-up in the back of the book. It was a “glimpse of things to come”, with a revamped line-up & costumes of what could have been X-force, but clearly they ended up changing the roster in the interim. New Mutants#99, in my opinion, is still technically another Cameo of Shatterstar, since he only appears on One Page of the book. I would consider New Mutants#100 to be his 1st full Appearance. I’ve been grabbing-up these books for a while, so I already had these books compiled for myself, lol. The one that interests me here is the 1st Boom-Boom as Marvel Age Annual#1. As far as I knew, it was Secret Wars II #5. These Marvel Age first appearances are a new fad, and I wonder if they will last.

  4. And let’s not forget, Karma herself is also LGBT; having come out as a lesbian in X-force#75. One of my favorite stories for her was in a later volume of New Mutants or Academy X, where Dani set her up on a blind date with another lesbian, but the only thing they had in common was that they were both lesbians. I’ve seen this misconception so often in real-life, it was nice to see it pointed out in the X-books. And I was *so glad* that Anole & Graymalkin didn’t just automatically become a couple, just because they are both gay X-teens.
Speaking of Karma… remember when she was possessed by the Shadow King, gained a ton of weight, and then spent some time in an other-dimensional desert world where she lost it all to get back to her original slim likeness? That was one of the biggest plot conveniences in New Mutants history, lol.

  5. Of further note, Marvel Team-up 100 is even more collectible as the first story, the introduction of Karma, is by Chris Claremont & Frank Miller and the back-up tale is the first meeting of Storm and Black Panther by John Byrne & Chris Claremont.
