Agent Poyo's Picks of the Week for July 13th, 2016

I’m so tired of typing Rebirth, but here I am again, typing Rebirth because that’s whats going to be hot this week.. again.
So let’s just get on with the picks, besides these DC titles, I really don’t have a lot going on spec wise.
DC/Vertigo Pick
New Super-Man #1 (DC) – I’m not crazy about this, actually I have zero desire but if it’s flip worthy, sure, I’ll be picking up a few. I can understand the demand behind this, it will draw in the Asian readers and crowds for sure. So don’t skip this one.
Marvel Pick
Civil War II #3 (Marvel) – I’m going out on a limb here and think something is going to happen in this issue. Just a hunch, nothing else really stands out in the Marvel releases. Except I do really like the Amazing Spider-Man Civil War II #2 cover..
Indie Picks
Kong of Skull Island #1 (BOOM!) – I love Godzilla. I equally loved King Kong when I was a kid. So this is a must pick up for me. Plus that Eric Powell variant is sweet.
Disney Pixar Finding Dory #1 (Joe Books) – With the movie out, this is a no brainer, especially if you have kids. Buying one for me and the collection and one for the kiddos to have and read.
The Image #1 Pick
Horizon #1 (Image) – Here’s to hoping this is better than the last Image #1 pick I had, She Wolf. That was just freaking weird and awful. I’m never going to get that 10 minutes back of my life and I doubt I’ll be able sell it.
That’s all I got this week.

  1. Having a hard time understanding the hesitation a lot of people have with New Superman 1…the art is great, the story seems interesting. Is it just the China theme?

    1. I am all for this. I am sure they are going to introduce a ton of new elements and characters to the story. Here is the problem, if they use American concepts then people will complain, make it “too ethnic” and people will complain. There will need to be a good balance between classic Chinese culture and modern superhero culture for it to survive. A tad too far in either side and people will complain. Batman of China is easy to explain, Batman Inc. introduced a ton of foreign Batmen. Chinese Wonder Woman is just an archetype character. I am digging superman stuff for the first time in years.

      1. If I could only buy one hero a month it would be Superman…New 52 Superman was a shadow of the one in Superman/Action Rebirth. I’m all in for as long as it goes. That goes for New Superman also.

      2. I don’t really watch this show, but I think Fresh of the Boat proves you can walk this line well and be commercially successful (not just with asians but just americans in general.) Also, (btw I kind of hate I’m becoming this guy….) the Asian experience and what it means as an identity does vary from someone like me who has never heard anything but English at home, to someone who’s parents both moved from Asia in their 30s.
Ok seriously, I don’t want to be this guy what am I dong Tony? Its a cool book, great spec value. Diversity is cool, its not taking away from anyone or hurting anyone.

      3. I think in this case being diverse is good because it’s a completely new character who turns into a superhero and we don’t have to replace the original supes to get him…unlike x23 and lady Thor.

    2. For me, it’s like.. meh, we’ve had a Superman for how many years now? This is just another one that happens to be Asian and lives in China. I still think some of the best Superman I’ve read recently is still Snyder’s Superman Unchained, that was some good stuff.

      1. Respectfully poyo (I really do like you buddy, don’t take this the wrong way at all); it’s from the privileged position of being the majority race that’s represented almost exclusively throughout those 75+ years that makes this hard to see how important is to someone like me. I actually hated this idea a lot, but I just read the first issue and I need to fully process what exactly it did/meant, but it’s something emotional and visceral in the gut when you see ppl that look like you (and not just 1 or 2 characters, the whole panel/page) in something you’ve always loved (DC/comics/Superman).

        1. I hear ya and I understand everything you said.
I guess my problem is, I no longer see race. All I see are humans. The reason I’m not getting behind this New Super-Man is, it’s really nothing new but a new face and race. I just wish the creative teams would be a little more creative in coming up with new heroes, whether they are black, white, Hispanic, Asian, male or female.. I really care less about the race, all I see are humans. I just want some cool original story telling, that’s all. To me, that’s great there’s an Asian Super-Man now but I think they could of done something better than just ripping off the guy who’s been around for 75 years.
Like Daredevil, they introduced Blindspot (who is Asian), original cool new hero if you ask me. Been enjoying every book Soule has been putting out in this new series.

          1. Let me preface this by saying Poyo is one of the most grounded people I know. I know with him this is not a race issue. I do think people are getting burned out with the constant re-imaging of Marvel characters. It is not one or two, it is almost all of them. Thor, Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, etc If Marvel hadn’t done it to all of the characters I think people would be more accepting of New Superman. But at this point people are kind of like “it’s been done repeatedly”. I am on board for New Super-Man though.

            1. Thanks Anthony.
I think the total turn off was the spoiler of also the new Batman and Wonder Woman.. just comes off as a cheesy knock off and coming from the second biggest publisher, I think they could of done better to introduce new characters and heroes based out of Asia. I think just creating characters with the same names based out of another country with a different race, does the Asian community no justice. They not good enough to create or get their own original super heroes? I guess if I was Asian, I’d probably be kind of ticked off.. I’d be demanding our own original heroes, not the same old crud we’ve been reading for the past half century.
I mean, I will read the first issue.. that’s my rule, I read everything I buy but I just don’t think I’m gonna be jumping on board. Like I said in another comment, the only recent Superman book I liked and enjoyed was Superman Unchained.

      1. And now anything before will be called Before Birth.
BB, RB and AB are the new acronyms that must be used. Poyo declares this new policy and claims tis is the law of the chuland now!

    1. I actually really like the bright orange color scheme on the 2nd Prints. 🙂
… and I finally signed up for WordPress, but I’m still not seeing a Like Button here on CHU… and can people see my WordPress homepage publicly? There are all these random pictures of food-stuff, even though the topic I chose was Art & Entertainment… I really only wanted to use WordPress for CHU! Lol.

      1. … and now it says my comment is awaiting moderation. It never did that before I used WordPress. Hey, this is the commenter formerly known as FromTheAshes21. WordPress wouldn’t let me claim that name…

      2. I only see the “Like” button when you click on the notifications/replies link on upper right hand corner of your browser when logged into WordPress (when someone replies to your comment) and or within the WordPress app for your tablet or phone. On the main site it does not show up within the comments.

  2. Honestly I couldn’t have given two f’s about Kenan; but when I saw those first pages of previews, as an Asian American (and trust me I’m as white washed as they come, don’t speak a lick of Korean and my mom’s Ohio through and through), I had a really crazy emotional response. I guess there really is something to seeing people who look like you on the pages of something that’s always been a part of your life, wearing that stupid S with a bunch of other asian men, women and kids around. I guess its hard to explain to non-minorities, but its all love for everyone from me.
Or maybe I just got really finessed by this diversity angle. I’d like to believe the first though.

  3. I mean, Superman is one of the oldest super heroes of all time. He definitely needs new breathe breathed in. I’ve been bored with the character for a long time.
If these IPs are to survive, they need to be recreated. Scream and yell all you like, fanboys. As Robert ZImmerman once said, “the times they are a-changin’!”

  4. I didn’t read She Wolf so I can’t comment on the quality but I’m pretty sure it’s going back for a 2nd printing. Or at least Image sold through their initial printing (unless they’ll all gathering dust on shop walls).
