One Year Later: Spec Review for 9/20/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

I started working at a new location for my company recently and went to a local shop near there at lunch and…..SCORE!!! Decent sized store with a friendly staff. They are just getting rolling with the business but are off to a good start. They have a ton of good stuff that I came out with for cover price or less.
Star Wars(2015) #1
Scooby-Doo Team Up #12
Darth Vader(2017) #2, 3 and 4
The Realm #1 Cover B
Mister Miracle(2017) #1 Covers A and B Booyah!
Thanks Counterplay Comics, best of luck to you! You’ll be seeing me again!

I also wanted to point out a few books that are showing some heat lately.
Elric The White Wolf #1 – Regular cover isn’t doing much but Cover B is at $23 and Cover C is at $17.
Batgirl (Vol. 4) #28 JG Jones Steampunk Variant – Currently selling for $150+
Saga #1 – Pushing $200
All-New Wolverine #20 Leonard Kirk Variant Cover – Hovering at $35 right now
Thor: God of Thunder #6 – $30

Poyo’s Drek – Let’s see what the agent told us to stay away from last year.
MillarWorld Annual 2017 – Original Value: $3           Current Value: $3 or less.
Good call Poyo….but with your knowledge I expect unexpected drek. Last year’s MW Annual was a flop too.

Winners

Quick Flip Winners

Shirtless Bear-Fighter #4 Variant Paolo Rivera Cover – Anthony, Poyo & Mel Pick

Batman The Red Death #1 1st Ptg Foil-Stamped Cover – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4           Quick Flip Value: $25          Current Value: $17
This one could easily be in the Winner’s category but it was selling for as high as $25 within a month or so of release.

Misbegotten Runaway Nun #1 Variant Justin Case Cover – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4           Quick Flip Value: $10          Current Value: $4-5
Still a cool Marilyn homage.

Still Potentials

Aquaman #28 Variant Joshua Middleton Cover – Anthony, Poyo & Mel Pick
Original Value: $4           Current Value: $4
Still sales activity. Put this one in still potential because Middleton has had a great run this year and this could still climb. These also do pretty well sold in sets.

Has it really been a year since that Aquaman Middleton Cover? Doesn’t seem like it’s been a year.

As for the Red Death, I enjoyed flipping that book for $25.

  2. Aaron Horwitz says:

Nice write up, Shawn. If you’re in the area now, I’m at Comically Speaking in Reading on Saturdays and Sundays. Stop by and say Hi.

  3. MrPope says:

Im surprised more people didn’t buy up that 2nd print TAH 22. I sold a semi clean Red Death for $20 a week or so ago. That book still has some legs!

  4. A. King says:

This time last year I was all about the Metal.
