From Option to Screen – The Books We’d Love To See Adapted Part II

Every week, hundreds of new comic books hit the local shelves. Many of these are long ongoing titles while others come and go quickly, being mini-series or one shots.

Last fall we visited a bunch of the books and titles that had options or media deals that have not gone beyond the option or if they did, they’re still in the wee early stages of ever getting turned into a show.

This is where we dive into the books that either haven’t been optioned or if they did, it’s long expired that we would all love to see and welcome being adapted into a television show or movie. Welcome to Part II of Books We’d Love to see Adapted.

Sheltered – Image Comics

Sheltered by writer Ed Brisson had an option but we’ve seen nothing since. This was a great read and one of my favorite Image Titles at the time.

It really could have gone on longer than the 15 issues it ran. Lots of potential story lines could be spun off the main plot, making this an awesome television show.

We did see this slighly heat up long ago, I think we saw issue #1 reaching the $10 to $15 range but if another option or media deal were to occur, we could probably see another small spike for those that are still holding onto these.

Despite it not having a media deal and there’s no sight of one anytime soon, I still highly recommend this series to those who might be new to comics and enjoy the end of the world crazy apocalyptic plots involving some demented kids and teens.

Motor Girl  and Rachel Rising- Abstract Studios

So I had Motor Girl on my list and lo and behold, it’s announced with a media option with Hulu.

This is a great read. I liked it so much after the first 2 issues I kept buying the issues for the personal collection and waited for the Omnibus to come out (not sure why it’s just not a double sized trade) as I wanted to read it all in one sitting.

It’s certainly a book to watch now. Seems the market got flooded so you might can nab this one for cheap for the long term gamble if it does eventually make it to Hulu where we should see more secondary market love.

So since this one just got optioned, I’ll just dive into the next Terry Moore book that also had an option long ago but nothing really came out of it (last update is the script is still being shopped around, typical process after a script has been written and it’s sadly where they can stay in limbo for years or eternity). That book is Rachel Rising.

Another popular book of Moore’s that went for 42 issues. I have yet to find the time to read this book but I usually hear nothing but great things from those who have. It’s on my to-read list for sure.

Spread – Image Comics

Spread, the long time CHU favorite book from Justin Jordan and Kyle Strahm. It’s certainly one of my favorite Image titles.

Not sure how well this would do as a movie or television show as the CGI would be a big part of the budget for sure with this one.

If this is done right, would make an awesome show though. It went on for 25 issues but it carries the type of plot and story that could easily have spin off stories, one-shots, etc. The perfect type of book for television where they want to expand the universe.

I must admit, I am well prepared if and when this gets a media deal. This was one of those books I loaded up on originally and hoping one day that hoard I got pays off.

The Grievous Journey Of Ichabod Azrael – 2000AD

This is more of a personal pick of mine. This was also one of my all time favorite reads as I love a good revenge story. The Grievous Journey of Ichabod Azrael was written by Rob Williams.

His name is Ichabod and he was a killer. But his death was only the beginning of his story

ICHABOD AZRAEL WAS THE DEADLIEST, MEANEST OUTLAW THE OLD WEST EVER SPAT OUT – but his murder at the hands of hired guns takes him on a journey through the underworld as he desperately tries to return to the land of the living and his true love Zoe.

Ichabod will stop at nothing to get back home, even if that includes bringing an end to the world in order to do so!

I just feel this would make a great show, maybe a movie. A show would be more justified though. Not a spec book and likely will never make it to our screens, I can still hope.

That concludes Part II. No worries though, I got plenty more coming….
