Welcome to this weeks spec and drek. This is where we pick the winners each week we think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.
I’m doing these a bit early this week as despite it being Thanksgiving Week, it’s going to be a busy week for me, so enjoy my picks of the week a bit early this week.
DC Picks
Not a lot going on with DC this week. One book that’s caught my attention as I didn’t even realize he was writing it until I was reviewing what’s coming out for this article is The Other History of the DC Universe #1 which is written by John Ridley, who’s a academy award winning screen writer.
So it might just end up being a good read. Plus the cover of Black Lightning by Jamal Campbell is pretty awesome if you ask me.
Marvel Picks
This one might see some love but I’m picking it also for the awesome cover of Ms Marvel for this second printing.
Champions #1 (Outlaw Tie-In) is already sold out at Midtown and other major retailers. This one might do well considering you can still find the first printing at most of these retailers. When Kamala Kahn makes it to the MCU, all her stuff is going to blow up… Hope your holding onto some of her first appearances.
I’m still undecided about this next pick. Something tells me it could end up being a winner and the other side of me says it could just result in being a complete dud. I guess it all depends on what Marvel/Disney decides to do with it. If they end up doing a Disney+ show, we all know what follows but Power Pack #1 is that very book.
It’ll be interesting to watch the previous volumes for this title. Maybe pick up a copy if you hadn’t plan on for the cheap gamble. It is what I believe is a 5 issue mini-series so Marvel/Disney could just be testing the response from consumers on which direction to take…
Indie and Small Publisher Picks
Grab this one for the read. Colonel Weird: Cosmagog #2. There’s also a pretty cool variant available as well: Colonel Weird: Cosmagog #2 (Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer Variant Cover)
Grab this one if you love Momoko as this is the type of character that fits her style for sure. Momoko is doing all the A covers for this mini-series if I’m recalling it correctly.
Usagi Yojimbo Wanderers Road #1 Peach Momoko Cover
The one you pick up cause you bought all the other printings for it goes to LCSD 2020 Ice Cream Man #20. Great homage covers to Dr. Seuss books. They need to keep these coming.
You can still find the Ice Cream Man #20 (2nd Printing) and the Ice Cream Man #20 (3rd Printing) available as well. The first printing is a little harder to find and it’s still selling around the $25 to $30 range on average.
The new Rick Remender series is another must pickup, mostly for the read (and the potential it turns into a show as his stuff has gone on to get optioned and make it to the screens).
Scumbag #2 hits stands this week and it’s a great read, hoping the series keeps me entertained for quite a lot of issues.
The premise is nothing new or groundbreaking but it might still be an entertaining read from WWE wrestlers making their writing debut.
Assassin & Son #1 is on the check out list for me. Some are already listing these for $9.99 on eBay when you can still find them at Midtown for cover (limited to 1 per).
I love a good crime drama suspense type of book. So this new Source Point Press book Black of Heart #1 has my attention this week.
Probably one of my favorite reads so far this year is Yasmeen #4. Great story, great art. You can’t ask for anything more out of a comic.
Don’t forget to pickup the LCSD issues of LCSD 2020 Something Is Killing Children #1 (Foil Variant) and the awesome Momoko variant for LCSD 2020 Power Rangers #1 (Foil Variant). These were the only LCSD books besides Ice Cream Man #20 that I’m picking up. I don’t expect them to heat up but over time could result in a decent flip.
That’s all I got this week. No drek again, I just don’t have it in me. 11 week old puppy makes me tired.
Just scored two copies of the Champions Outlawed at one stop comic shop. Last two they had. Couldn’t find it anywhere else…there are no presale copies on eBay right now. Something tells me this could be hot out of the gate.
