If there’s one thing that can be said about the best comics of 2018, it’s that there was an awful lot of competition. The playing field was an undoubtedly even one, and making a selection was further complicated by the range of genres that produced strong and compelling content. We had everything from heterosexual grannies rediscovering a lost love affair to horror stories peopled by superheroes and self-published wrestling epics.
Comparing and contrasting so many different and diverse graphic greats was a definite
challenge – but one we were all too happy to embrace. So, without further ado, here’s a
rundown of some of the best and most ground-breaking comics of the year that was. Continue reading “2018’s Most Interesting Indy Comics”

Spiderman Into the Spiderverse is an incredible movie. I finally got to see it on New Year’s Eve with my son Joe. The mashing of multiple versions of Spider-Men (and Women) was a blast and set the collecting world on fire. Miles Morales, Spider-Man Noir, Peter Porker, Spider-Man 2099 (the after credit scene is a blast, will put it at the bottom if you haven’t seen it), and Spider Gwen all got boosts to their first appearances as a result. But, was there a time that Spider-men from all over the multi-verse got together before? Continue reading “Origin Stories: Spiderman Into the Spiderverse”

2018 has truly been the year of the superhero movie. Of course, you could make a reasonable case for many of the preceding years also staking a claim to that accolade, but 2018 has ratcheted up superhero cinematic fare to the next level. With February’s Black Panther predicted to make waves at the Oscars and April’s Avengers: Infinity War needing no explanation, the momentum of superhero movies is showing no signs of subsiding. Continue reading “Superheroes Continue to be Key Players in Both Cinemas and Slots”
In order to have the complete pantheon of comic book characters, a cruel yet charismatic villain is essential. We want someone who we love to hate, but who’s complex enough to still evince some small amount of sympathy. They have to be boorish but believable, horrible but with a humorous wit that has us not wanting to see the back of them. And they have to be placed in context. They need cronies and sets that make them jump off the page as a fully formed person, and one place that every good bad guy loves to hang out is the casino. From the Joker to Two-Face, the Penguin to Chance, here are four villains who really enjoy a flutter.

Action Comics #1006 is in stores tomorrow. It reveals the identity of the leader of the Invisible Mafia that is secretly controlling the city of Metropolis. Now, I am not a Superman reader, so let me know if this is a first appearance or just an identity reveal, but whichever, she has big things in store for Superman and possibly Clark Kent. Plus, the final two page spread really knocked me off my feet. Continue reading “Spoilers: Action Comics #1006 The Return of one of Superman’s Earliest Artifacts”
