Diamond Advanced Reorder List 5/16/13

comics_diamond_comic_distributors_inc
One way to guage how hot a comic is/will be is by the Diamond Comics Advanced reorder list. This gives retailers a chance to up their orders for books that may have caught some heat before the release and before the final order cut offs. So without further ado, this weeks advanced reorder list (Dominated by DC Comics and Superman Unchained #1)

1. Superman Unchained #1 – Retailers are reordering this DC $4.99 book drawn by Jim Lee. It appears several times on the list like:

2. Superman Unchained #1 – 75th anniversary “Reborn” Variant

3. Green lantern #21 – Promo Rings are back causing an uptick in Green Lantern book orders.

4. Batman Superman #1 – Relaunch of the out-of-continuity series featuring DC’s heavy hitters

5. Walking Dead TPB Vol 18 – Sales Juggernaut for comic shops (and book stores alike, but that is not represented here)

6. East of West #1 4th Printing – Even with heavy orders on this Hickman book, people are still clamoring for it.

7. Superior Spider-man #11 – Following on the Peter is gone story we will see How Spider-ock handles life without responsibility with all that power

8. Thanos Rising #3 The story of Thanos’ disfunctional childhood continues, great story so far.

9. Earth 2 #13

10. Jupiters Legacy #1 2nd print – Even with a considerable overprint and huge print run, this hot book has gone back to a second print. We have been moving the Phantom Variants pretty easily.

11. All New X-men #14

12. Age of Ultron #9 – Orders are ramping up for the introduction of Neil Gaimen’s Angela to the Marvel U. in #10

13. Amazing Spiderman Omnibus

14. Ten Grand #2 – 1st issue sold well retailers saw better than expected sales (I would imagine due to speculation of Image books.) but it was a good first issue.

15. Ten Grand #1 2nd Print – see above.

16. Herobear and the Kid Special #1- The fantastic all ages book is back and now from Boom. The early issues of the self published series used to command good money, hopefully we will see the prices rise on them again.

19. Superman Unchained #1 75th anniversary Lex Luthor Variant – See 1 and 2.

21. Cable and X-Force #9

22. Dardevil End of Days HC

23. Adventure Time TPB Vol. 3

24. Kick Ass 3 #2 – Millar’s Teen “real life” super hero saga comes to an end with this series.

REGULAR SHOW #1
BOOM ENTERTAINMENT

(W) K.C. Green (A) Allison Strejlau (CA) Nick Edwards & Various
REGULAR SHOW… IT’S ANYTHING BUT! Cartoon Network’s powerhouse series now has its own comic book series! Hot on the heels of the smash hit adaptation, ADVENTURE TIME, KaBOOM! unveils the next all-ages comic phenomenon! Join Mordecai the Bluejay and Rigby the Raccoon, a couple of best bros in their twenties just tryin’ to chill for a bit, man. But when you’re livin’ in as crazy a world as they are, no day can be called…regular! Ask your retailer about the pre-order variant by Chris Houghton (ADVENTURE TIME, REED GUNTHER) and the incentive variant by Dustin Nguyen (BATMAN, L’IL GOTHAM)!

There are a TON of variants on this book, but I adore speculating on books that have an existing fan base. I can’t resist. Pick a cover you like & go with it.

( Dark Horse has a great book this week: Dream Thief #1, if it wasn’t a mini, I would have bought a ton )

A lot of people ask me why I like to speculate on modern comic books. Original Art, Gold, Silver & Bronze age comics are a much better investment. I’m a comic book fan, a voracious reader of new material. I love how new books set the pace for back issues. It is fast paced & never stagnant due to the constant release of new material. Right now modern comics are the petri dish of pop culture, comic shops the breeding ground.

I have been collecting comics since the 1970’s & been in the business of selling them since the 1980’s. I love a quality story & a great buy, equally.

I speculate on new comics every week. I always have & I always will. Purchasing modern comic books with the intent of making a profit is my hobby of choice. It’s impossible that every new comic week will generate a book of “Walking Dead class” potential, but it’s still fun to try to make savvy buys. You can sit back & wait for aces, or you can play the hand your dealt to the best of your ability.

Sometimes, I’m right. Sometimes I’m wrong, but I play every week.

If you enjoy this new micro-blog format of my weekly market report.
Please re-tweet it. Post it online.

Pick of the Week for 5/15/13

Picks of the Week 5/14/13

This is a good speculator week and I have a lot of picks. Each week I put out my list of books worth taking a look at and to consider for flipping purposes. I enjoy comic book speculation and have done well with my picks each week. Some take longer than others to heat up, some didn’t take off at all, but each week I still plug along.

This weeks picks has one that stands above the rest:
1. Regular Show #1 – It is a Boom Studio’s book. It is based off the hit Cartoon Network Show of the same name. The big reason I am speculating on this one is because of the success that “Adventure Time’ #1 had. I have a strong feeling the same people who went after ‘Adventure Time’ will be clammoring for this one. I will be picking up both the regular and Phantom Variant covers.

2. Dream Merchant #1 – Why is this one a pick? Well, it’s a new Image book. A new Image number 1. A new book written by Nathan Edmonson (writer of ‘The Activity’, ‘Who is Jake Ellis’). It is a double sized issue so more value for the money. The story follows Winslow who has been dreaming of an Old Traveler who has protected him from those who hunt him. Seems like the world has been made to forget about these strange hunters. Very psyhcadelic feel to it.

3. Helheim #3 – Issues 1 and 2 sold out. Strong story and fan buzz.

4. Batgirl #20 – New Ventriloquist. See the art, this is a ‘Joker’ scary looking character. written by Gail Simone.

5. Battlestar Galactica #1 – Classic Battlestar done by the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. They are known for their big cosmic books, and few touch the epic cosmic level that Battlestar did.

Other things to pick up this week:
‘Strange Attractions’ Hard Cover from Archaia Press. Created by ’27’ and ‘Swamp Thing’ writer Charles Soule. It is the story of a disgraced professor who spent his life researching the “Complex Theroy” which states you can use mathmatics to predict the outcome of anything. All the while, New york city is a living thing slowly destroying itself from the inside. I spoke to Charles Soule on free comic bok day and he said this is a must for fans of the movie ‘Inception.’ I have this and have been waiting to read it.

‘Fall of the House of Usher’ #1 – What’s not to like Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Corben. I have been a fan of Corben’s since he broke out on the scene doing art for Warren magazines like ‘Creepy’ and ‘Eerie’.

Also, please feel free to check out my auctions on eBay. Lots of Phantom Variants, lots of store variants, and other hot books like Peter Panzerfaust: http://www.ebay.com/sch/apopcomics424/m.html?item=161023096136&pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item257db97548&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Like us on facebook! www.facebook.com/comicsheatingup we are running a contest from now until we hit 100 likes. Once we get 100 likes we will give away a free Phantom Variant, Store Variant, or Ghost Variant. We are at 24 so far and picking up more by the day.

Like us on Facebook

Just wanted to send out a quick thanks to everyone who stops by. In less than two months on the new blog we have went from getting a hundred hits a week to nearly 2,000. This is incredible considering we do no advertising on the site and most of you are finding me on google searches. When I stopped writing for the retailer I was working with, I did not tell any of my old subscribers, and was worried I wouldn’t get any hits, but man was I wrong. You guys are the best.

Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/comicsheatingup for each landmark we hit I will run a new contest. Once we hit 100 likes I will give a way a random Phantom Variant, Ghost Variant, or Store variant for one lucky subscriber. The contest will run from now until we hit 100 likes.

Bidding down on ‘Sixth Gun’ since NBC passes on show

It was bound to happen, hype built up on “The Sixth Gun’ stemming from the announcement that NBC optioned it for a TV show. When the NBC passed on it, prices dropped. (Do not get me wrong though, this is a great book.) This ends up creating what stock traders call “bag holders,” as in being left holding the bag. The thing with it is, NBC could still make the show in one of it’s subsidiaries. And Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt are still shopping it around. This has happened with several hot books such as ‘The Test’ which burned white hot and then dropped off. Oddly, this did not happen to  ‘Chew’ #1 after Showtime passed on their option

There are currently a couple of copies of ‘Sixth Gun’ number 1 sitting on eBay that are real steals.

Here is the regular edition for $12.50 with a few hours left:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121107763982?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

(Edit: 80 views and now up to $14.50)

(Edit 2: 177 views and closed at $92.78, Anyone else bid on this?)

And the Free Comic Book Day Edition for $5.50 with 2 days left:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/140972556601?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

(Edit: Now up to $7.00 I threw some bids on it)

(Edit 2: Still only at $7.50)

This book had peaked well into the $300 range.

We will have to see what happens with the options for ‘The Damned.’

(W) Ghostface Killah & Various (A) Breno Tamura & Various (CA) Christopher Mitten, Ronald Wimberly
12 Reasons To Die is a brutal tale of gangsters, betrayal, and one vengeful soul hunting the 12 Dons who conspired his murder. Created by Ghostface Killah and produced by RZA, this hard-knuckled horror/crime hybrid follows multiple timelines – and multiple artists – in the quest for revenge.

It wasn’t my cup of tea as a read, BUT gangsta’s n rappers are gonna want it.

There are a bunch of variants.
The 1 in 4 looks like the one to grab.

Picks of the week 5/8/13

Each week we spotlight a book or a couple of books that we thing are worth checking out and may rise in value. Here is our speculation picks of the week:

20130506-212524

1. Walking Dead 110- you cannot go wrong picking up Walking Dead books. Th issue features Michonne and Ezekiel battling it out. A classic fan favorite versus the cool new guy with the tiger.

2. Über #1- sold out #0 and now #1 is already sold out. Sold out before it got to the stores. Avatar finally has a true hit on its hand. Über #0 also gets a second print this week.

3. Chin Music 1- Last week we saw Ben Templesmith’s new book with JMS, ‘Ten Grand’ make the list. Now we have his ’30 Days of Night’ co-creator’s new book. An Image number 1 is always a good bet, and with Steve Niles at the helm if this Lovecraft meets Hard boiled crime noir, we cannot pass it up. Also like ‘Ten Grand’ this one will have a phantom variant.

4. Twelve Reasons to Die- New publisher Blackmask Studios, run by Punk Rock Legend, Bret Gurewitz of Bad Religion Fame. Bringing in even more music star power is this is based on Ghostface Killah’snew album. Long shot but these things sometimes work out. This is backed up by store variants (tour variants) and a ticket variant which gets you into one of his shows.

Free comic book day

May the 4th is almost upon us and as you know it’s free comic book day. Some stores like Capital Comics in Maryland are kicking things off early with a midnight release. A chance get the free books a little early.

Some of the highlights for the year are ‘The Walking Dead Tyrese’s story’ which Robert Kirkman said will not be released in any other formats. No trade reprints, no back up story reprint.
Also, ‘ The Regular Show’ ‘Regular Comic’ also drops. This will be the first appearance of the comic and characters. ‘RIPD’ also drops today and back issues of the first series have been hot.

Diamond Comics Advanced Reorder list 5/3/13

Diamond Advanced Reorder List

One way to guage how hot a comic is/will be is by the Diamond Comics Advanced reorder list. This gives retailers to up their orders for books that may have caught some heat before the release and before the final order cut offs. So without further ado, this weeks advanced reorder list:

1. Mighty Thor Omnibus Hardcover Vol. 2

2. Batman Beyond 16

3.Batman lil’ Gotham #2 – First issue sold well. Does well as an download and translating well into sales for floppies.

4. Constantine #1 2nd Printing – 1st issue of Post-Hellblazer leads to a 2nd printing

5. Supior Spider-man #10 – Fallout from #9 is translating into increased orders for 10.

6. Five Ghosts Haunting of Fabian Gray #3 of 5 – Word is this has moved to an ongoing, retailers upping their orders.

8. East of West #3 – Another hit from Jonathan Hickamn, first issue is seeing increase prices on eBay

9. Bounce #1 – Heat from ‘Sex’ helping to pull interest into this book. #1’s from Image have been good speculator fodder

14. Helheim #2 2nd Printing – ‘Sixth Gun’s’ writers latest hit. Support from variants doing well on the secondary market and good story and art leading to good sales.

Terry Moore tweets ‘Rachel Rising’ 2nd and 3rd print run numbers

I had put out the print run for Terry Moore’s ‘Rachel Rising’ earlier. But one thing was missing, the reprint print run numbers. Well we have them, straight from Terry Moore’s mouth (or at least his twitter feed.)
1 2nd print – 1,350 copies
1 3rd print – 1,200 copies

These are tiny compared to the first print which clocked in at 12,600. Normally I do not mess with reprints as, well they are reprints, but with so few of these available, these could shoot up in price compared to the first print.

Hoax Hunters Print Run

hh3

So as we reported, ‘Hoax Hunters’ has been optioned for a movie deal. The back issue prices have been moving up nicely. But how many issues are there out there? Well Here you go. I do not have a solid number on #2 yet as it did not appear on the top 300 list for books shipped but it is an estimate. All in all, pretty low number for a  Modern Comic.

#0 – 5,779
#1 – 6,973
#2 -4,000 (estimated)
#3 -4,404

My pick of the week. The comic shipping this week that will be worth your valuable speculator y consideration, and why.

FCBD 2013 MASS EFFECT KILLJOYS RIPD

(W) Jeremy Barlow & Various (A/CA) Garry Brown & Various
Three blockbuster titles fill this FCBD offering! In R.I.P.D., a séance goes terribly wrong! Then, in Mass Effect, follow a flight-school grad as he breaks the rules to prove himself in space! Finally, check out the police-state landscape of the highly anticipated miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys!

This weeks pick shouldn’t cost you a dime as it is part of Free Comic Book Day. It is out of stock at Diamond. It has a lot going for it, but the Killjoy’s & Gerard Way’s involvement is why it is on my radar. Umbrella Academy set records at my shop with online sales. ( I bought a Google ad word early on & cleaned up )

Also: Boom Studio’s Regular Time #1 has been delayed several weeks due to a licensing issue, that makes the Kaboom FCBD special the 1st appearance of the regular show. Not a bad pick up for the price of FREE.

Picks of the week 5/1/13

I am getting this one out a little early this week. Here are my picks of the week for Wednesday 5/1/13.

1. Ten Grand by J. Michael Straczynski and Ben Templesmith. This one is on the list for several reasons. One, it is the return of JMS to a monthly series. Two, art by 30 days of night creator Templesmith. Three, it has been called John Constantine done right (sorry New 52 Constantine). Finally, because it was featured on the Advance Reorder List from Diamond comics. See it here.

2. Also on the list is Polarity #2. A great story of a guy who stopped taking his meds for bi-polar and suddenly gained super powers. #1 sold well and gained a bit on the secondary market.

Also out this week are a couple of cheap trade paper backs worth picking up.

1. Bedlam Vol.1 from Nick Spenser. Madder Rose, a Joker-esque character gets “cured” and goes about helping the police to solve a series of brutal crimes. The first story arch is fantastic and features art by Riley Rossmo. At $9.99 this is worth the pick up.

2. Great Pacific Vol.1 Trashed comes out this week from Image as well, and also value priced at $9.99. This is one of my favorite new books and wish that is would get the exposure it deserves. Joe Harris spins the tale of Chaz Worthington who claims the great floating pile of plastic in the Pacific Ocean to start a country. It features pirates, nukes, and a giant squid. Yup, giant squid. Worth the look. Amazon has this for $6.14 or 33% off.

‘Hoax Hunters’ movie deal sends prices up

Seems these announcements come out every day now, and when they do the market takes notice quickly. Steve Seeley’s Hoax Hunters has been picked up for a movie deal and prices are shooting up.

Issue 0 is closing in the $37 range. A set of 0-5 went for a best offer with an asking price of $75.

‘The Strain’ #1 on the rise. Tv deal set

Sorry, I was away this weekend camping (and hitting a bunch of shops) and I didn’t get the reception from my phone or iPad to get this out.

Bleeding Cool has noted that the Guellermo Del Torro horror comic is heading to FX. Looks like a pilot has been ordered. In turn, prices on #1 have started to shoot up. The first issue was released for $1 and is now going for $13 with the 1 in 5 variant going for $15. A quick scan of eBay shows people are asking for, on average $24.95 for a buy it now.

Diamond Comics Advanced reorder and reorder list 4/26/13

One way to gauge how hot a comic will be is by looking at the Diamond Comics Advanced Reorder list. This is where retailers can up their orders on books before the final order cut-off. This list tends to be where retailers, who were playing conservative on certain books, go all in after buzz picks up. This week’s highlights are dominated by (Injustice Gods Among Us, and Spider-Man) reprints:

1. Amazing Spider-Man #700 4th Printing Variant – People just cannot get enough of the death of Peter Parker (for now) and the great homage covers Marvel is doing on each of the subsequent reprints are sending completists scrambling for them.

2. Injustice Gods Among Us #2 3rd print – This under ordered book has been hot on the secondary market in 1st print form, and now people are trying to read what all the buzz is about.

3. Injustice Gods Among Us #3 3rd print – See Above

5. East of West #1 3rd print – Even With a 54,000 copy print run, the book sold out. With the book being so good, and positive word of mouth, this Jonathan Hickman book keeps growing. 1st prints sell for around $10 for now. I am sitting on a little stash of these. (should have done the same for ‘Saga’)

6. Superior Spider-Man #1 3rd print – see Amazing #700 above.

7. Superior Spider-Man #3 3rd print

13. Five Ghosts Haunting of Fabian Gray #2 2nd print – Awesome book, great word off mouth, selling out within a week of printing, now retailers are going back for more. Can’t wait for the prices on these to jump.

15. Regular Show #1 – See what happened with Adventure Time? Well this book got pushed back to May delivery giving retailers a chance to order more. May be hot.

18. Dream Merchant #1 – A New Image #1, on everyone’s radar for potential heat.

Over on the regular reorder chart (books Diamond still has in stock) ‘Batman and Red Robin’ #19 still leads the pack. First appearance of Carrie Kelley has been hot. Has not translated into big dollars yet, but once the stock at Diamond dries up it may.

‘Rachel Rising’ #1 CGC 9.8 $1000

We talked about Rachel Rising #1 hitting $200 last Friday. http://comicsheatingup.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/rachel-rising-optioned-for-tv/

But a copy closed out a few days ago (April 21) for just shy of $1000.
A CGC 9.8 copy closed out at $949.99 on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RACHEL-RISING-1-CGC-9-8-TERRY-MOORE-FIRST-PRINTING-/111057397710?pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item19db8967ce

Looks like this price increase could be the real deal. People are already talking ‘Walking Dead’ prices here. I would suggest scouring stores not to secure copies while/if you can.
